Poetry Figurative Language

 Poetry uses a minimal amount of words to convey messages  It’s effects can be seen everywhere ◦ Song lyrics ◦ Greeting Cards ◦ Commercial Jingles ◦ Books (Dr. Seuss)

 Structure- how a poem is organized  Line- can be a single word, or many words together  Stanza- many lines together (similar to a paragraph)  Rhyme- the repetition of accented vowel sounds Example: thing and sing  Alliteration- repetition of consonant sounds in words close together (usually on the same line) Example: makes still pools, and sleep- song

 The use of imaginative comparisons to see the world in new ways ◦ Simile: Compares two things using the words “like” or “as” ◦ Metaphor: Compares two things without using the words “like” or “as” ◦ Personification: Giving human qualities to something not human ◦ Hyperbole: Using exaggeration to create an effect  Imagery: Language used to create pictures in the minds of the readers

 Onomatopoeia: words whose meaning indicates the sound they make  Paraphrase: rewording something (you do not change the meaning)  Rhyme scheme: the pattern of end rhyme Example: AABBA

1. Figure out which lines have the same end rhyme at the end of the lines (ex. dog and hog) 2. Line 1 begins with A and each word that rhymes with line 1 is A 3. The next line the does not rhyme with the first is B and all of the other lines that rhyme with it (continues through the end of a stanza)

 There was an Old Man with a beard,(A) Who said, 'It is just as I feared! (A) Two Owls and a Hen, (B) Four Larks and a Wren, (B) Have all built their nests in my beard!' (A)

 I must down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky, And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by, And the wheel's kick and the wind's song and the white sail's shaking, And a grey mist on the sea's face, and a grey dawn breaking.  What is the rhyme scheme?
