How can I be successful in Living Environment honors class? Supplies Needed: –Composition Notebook (for notes) –Pen & Pencil –Aviation High School Folder (for handouts) –Highlighter –Index Card (for studying purposes)

Things to do… 1. LAB: GO TO LAB WEEKLY!!!! A failing grade in lab results in automatic failure in this class. Reminder: Lab starts MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 28 TH !!! 2. HOMEWORK Do your homework… –Homework will be given at least three times a week. If I ask homework to be submitted on looseleaf it will be graded!

3. TESTS/QUIZZES –Tests and quizzes will be announced 2 to 3 days in advance. Be present for all tests and exams. Make-ups will only be granted if you have an excused absence 4. FOLLOW SCHOOL RULES NO CELL PHONE USE OR USE OF ANY OTHER ELECTRONIC DEVICES, NO WEARING HATS 5. RESPECT Be respectful to teacher at ALL TIMES. I give respect…I demand it in return!!!

6. ATTENDANCE –You are an integral part of the class. You cannot contribute to the class experience and you cannot LEARN from your instructor or your peers unless you are present. –Cutting – not good!!! I look forward to being your teacher during this 2015/2016 school year. Best wishes for a successful school year!

Aim: How can we use the scientific method to solve scientific problems?

Things to do… HOMEWORK: In Review Book READ CAREFULLY pages 146 through 153. Analyze all diagrams and tables… On pages 148 and 149; Just answer Questions 1 through 5.(write out full answers…) On page 153 and 154; Just answer Questions 6 through 16. (write out full answers) To be completed on looseleaf. Bring your Review Books to class tomorrow. Quiz: This Wednesday on Scientific Method and Observation and Inferences… Review your notes and questions…

Do Now Take out your Review Books and Homework Assignment HOMEWORK: STUDY!!!! Quiz Tomorrow on Scientific Method/Observations/Inferences Review your notes (know the steps of the scientific method) Review all Questions on Scientific method we did in class and you completed for HW

Making Inferences… Do Later: 1. Make three observations about the egg in the container… 2. Write three inferences…

WHAT IS THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD? The Scientific Method involves a series of steps that are used to investigate a natural occurrence.

Problem/Question Observation/Research Formulate a Hypothesis Experiment Collect and Analyze Results Conclusion Communicate the Results

1. PROBLEM? Develop a question or problem that can be solved through experimentation Possible Problem Statement Formats: 1. How does __________ affect ________________? 2.What is the effect of ________ on ___________? (The blanks usually refer to the independent and dependent variables respectively--- will learn more about later)

2. OBSERVATION & RESEARCH Make observations and research your topic of interest. Use Five senses (sight, taste, hearing, smell, touch) to make observations For Research Use newspaper articles, journals, prior experience, etc.

What is the next step?

3. HYPOTHESIS Predict a possible answer to the problem or question. Hypothesis should be written as an “if” and “then” statement Example: If soil temperatures rise, then plant growth will increase.

4. EXPERIMENTATION Develop and follow a procedure. Include a detailed materials list. The outcome must be measurable (quantifiable).

SETTING UP A CONTROLLED EXPERIMENT There are two groups in a controlled experiment: The Control Group & The Experimental Group The Experimental Group has the variable (factor being tested) The Control Group does not. (variable is absent)

TWO TYPES OF VARIABLE INDEPENDENT AND DEPENDENT VARIABLE Independent Variable: the variable that the experimenter can control; manipulate; (the treatment) Dependent Variable: the variable that responds to the treatment; should be measurable

5. DATA COLLECTION / ANALYSIS Modify the procedure if needed. Confirm the results by retesting. Organize results in tables and graphs.

6. CONCLUSION Include a statement that accepts or refutes (rejects) the hypothesis. Make recommendations for further study and possible improvements to the procedure.

More Trustworthy Experiment Has to be repeatable. Observation  Law I observe this pen falls.  Law of Gravity states that everything thrown up in the air will eventually fall down. Hypothesis  Theory (universally accepted explanation.)

The Scientific Method in Action Read the Handout about “The Strange Case of Beriberi” Work cooperatively to Complete the flow chart
