3 PPT/IEP Meeting Objective: – Review educational needs of Miguel Perez and determine how to help him be successful in school – Agree on the specifics of Miguel’s individualized education plan (IEP) Attendees: – Mrs. Perez, parent (XXXXXX) (with interpreter) – administrator, meeting facilitator (XXXXXXX) – general education teacher (xxx) – special education teacher (xxx) – speech pathologist (xxx) PPT/IEP Meeting - Miguel Perez

4 PPT/IEP Meeting Agenda – Mrs. Perez will share her observations and concerns regarding Miguel’s progress in school – Teachers and speech pathologist will share their observations and the results of Miguel’s evaluations – Teachers and speech pathologist will discuss the areas of concern, possible causes and recommendations (Present Levels of Performance/Impact) – The plan with specific next steps will be discussed – The draft IEP document will be reviewed to ensure that the plan is documented reflecting decisions made in the PPT meeting PPT/IEP Meeting - Miguel Perez

5 (Comments from Mrs. Perez through her interpreter) I am concerned that Miguel is not doing well in school I think that he is struggling only because it is new for him to be in school and to have to speak English all day He is not making friends and is unhappy at school. The other students are not nice to him. He is a good boy and I am worried that you think he has something wrong with him PPT/IEP Meeting - Miguel Perez

6 Observations and Evaluation Results Intelligence and academic performance – Miguel has average IQ verbal – 100 perceptual – 100 – Memory capability is average – All cognitive measures are average Miguel is having difficulty in all academic areas – Reading – pre-primer level cannot read any words does not know alphabet sounds has only a few sight words – Writing can write only 13 letters and 6 are written backwards writing is poor, “scribbling” cannot write on a line – Math writes several numbers backwards no one-to-one correspondence PPT/IEP Meeting - Miguel Perez

7 Observations and Evaluation Results Miguel’s relationships with other students – He often strikes out at other students if he is frustrated such as in PE class so other students do not want to be his partner or have him on their team – He often copies work from other students which they do not like – He doesn’t socialize at lunch time and seems to have manners that bother other students – When he does interact on the playground with other students he is aggressive and bossy. – He doesn’t participate as a part of a group – He spends a lot of time alone on the playground and at lunch PPT/IEP Meeting - Miguel Perez

8 Observations and Evaluation Results Speech and language – Miguel has numerous articulation errors He makes sounds incorrectly He has difficulty with verbal instruction – He only understands one step instructions When asked to tell a story his sentences were poorly constructed with many word usage errors His expressive vocabulary is below average at 72 (85-115 is average) PPT/IEP Meeting - Miguel Perez

9 Observations and Evaluation Results Occupational and physical therapy observations – Miguel has difficulty holding a pencil and does not hold it correctly (uses his whole hand) – He has difficulty with fine motor tasks like buttoning a button – He is a messy eater. Food often falls out of his mouth – He is unaware of food on his face or that his nose is running – Good gross motor skills (throwing, jumping) and body movement (walking, stepping around or over something) – Has difficulty learning sequences of movement like dance steps PPT/IEP Meeting - Miguel Perez

10 Observations and Evaluation Results In the classroom – Miguel has difficulty focusing and staying on task – He has difficulty following verbal directions He only understands one step directions He does watch what other students do and successfully mimics them – He has difficulty learning sequences of movement like dance steps PPT/IEP Meeting - Miguel Perez
