Key Conclusions in our Interim Report: December 2013 Assessment of Need In the South East one (net) additional runway by 2030 Options for additional runway capacity A shortlist of three options submitted by Heathrow Airport, Heathrow Hub and Gatwick Airport for detailed appraisal in 2014. Further work on an Estuary option Short and medium term options to maximise existing capacity Optimisation Strategy – package of airspace and airport changes to improve resilience and a trial of the smoothing of early morning arrivals at Heathrow to minimise delays, provide more predictable respite and improve runway resilience. Creation of an Independent Aviation Noise Authority to provide expert and impartial advice about the noise impacts of aviation; and a Senior Delivery Group to drive forward the Future Airspace Strategy (FAS) and deliver the Commission’s recommendations Programme of investment to improve surface access to Heathrow, Gatwick & Stansted and at Manchester, Birmingham, Luton and Glasgow.

Summer 2015 Publication of the Commission’s final recommendations Jan 2014 FebMarchMayAprilJuneJulyAugSeptOctNovDec January 16 th - Publication of Phase 2 Appraisal Framework consultation April 2 nd – Publication of finalised Phase 2 Appraisal Framework Additional work on the Thames Estuary will be undertaken in the first half of 2014 with a view to deciding in the second half of 2014 whether such a proposal should be considered alongside the short-list. If so, it will be subject to the same development and appraisal processes as the other short-listed schemes.
