2 43 A.D. Roman Emperor Claudius Caesar conquered Britain. Britain was inhabited by farmers Romans built roads on raised embankments called “highways.” Romans built towns for trade and markets. They built layered roads (stratum that were called “straets.” Mile is from mille, which means 1,000. The Roman mile was measured by 1000 paces. It was shorter than a mile today.

3 The native people groups were forced by the Romans to apply an alphabet to language that had never been written. This caused obvious problems. a. There is no ch or sh in Latin. b. The grammar rules did not transfer well which leads to all of those exceptions to the rules.

4 5 th Century A.D. Romans left Britain; the empire was diminishing. Invaders from places we know as Germany, Netherlands, and Denmark brought their language, Anglo-Saxon to Britain. This became the everyday language of the people.

5 597 A.D. Britain became officially Christian – official church language – Latin 711 A.D. Moors from north Africa invade Spain. They had Greek books at the library in Alexandria in Egypt translated into Arabic. These works came to Europe. 871-899 A.D. King Alfred the Great of Britain had major works translated into Latin including grammar terms, plant names and medical terms. Over 450 Latin words incorporated into English Terms concerning knowledge, arts, religion, or education – all from Latin.

6 1066 A.D. William the conqueror invaded Britain. Official language of the government, schools, and noblemen became French, which brought more Latin into English.

7 1400’s English started to be used in schools, but Latin was still taught. 1453 Constantinople was taken by Turkey giving Europeans access to the Greek works which were available from Greek scholars’ travels of the past. 1500-1650 The Renaissance was a time when the classical works of ancient Rome and Greece were highly prized and the commitment to replicating the styles and language of these cultures was emphasized.
