1. Maths Morning Thank you so much for coming on behalf of myself and your child.

2. Maths in Year 1 We have a massive focus on Place Value in Year 1 and grasping a concept of what a digit is representing. The National Curriculum states that by the end of Year 1 all children should be able to count forwards and backwards from any given number up to 100.

6. What is the part, part, whole? This represents the idea of numbers within numbers.

8. This understanding is then used to solve problems with other equipment……

9. Which leads into an understanding of Number bonds Tens and ones (units)

10. And eventually addition and subtraction as we begin to add and takeaway groups of items

11. How many different words can you think of for this sign?

15. Eventually, during the summer term, we also begin to think about multiplication. In Year 1 the children are required to be able to count in multiples of 2, 5 and 10.

16. Similar to addition and subtraction, it is all about having physical items to count…..

19. Easy to practise at home using cereal, toys, pens or sweets

20. Division Whilst we do not formally teach division in Year 1 we do begin to find 1/2s and 1/4s of numbers and objects.

21. Boat Race Using 2 columns, a dice and 2 counters. Choose a number to reach and use the dice to repeatedly add until someone reaches the designated number. First one to the top wins. I am thinking of a number Like ‘Guess Who’ the children use questions and a 100 square to guess the number that you are thinking of.

22. Roll the dice to make a number. Make four dashes on a piece of paper. Roll the dice, whatever number comes up you have to place this number on one of the dashes. Repeat until there is a number on every dash. Who has the biggest number? You could play biggest number wins or smallest number wins. Number bond snap Using normal playing cards, give both players cards ace – 10. Players reveal one card at a time. First player to spot a number bond to 10 gets to keep those cards. Repeat until one player uses all their cards. (Alternatively you could just add both cards together and whoever adds them quickest wins)

23. Shut the Box Write the numbers 0-10. The children have to roll a dice and cross out numbers which they can use to total that number. E.g. 10 - 4 = 6 2 + 3 = 5
