3 3 2012 Short Course Overview: –The course examines fundamental and advanced concepts related to solid rockets. Theoretical and practical aspects of the field are covered. History/Schedule: –Given at the 2008 and 2010 JPCs (25 to 30 students each time). –1 full day and one half day after the JPC. Status: –Instructors have been contacted and are interested in 2012. –A course profile was submitted to AIAA and was approved. –Some sections are in the process of being updated by the authors. –Package will be resubmitted for ITAR approval once updates are complete.

4 4 Professional Development 10-15 minute technical talks at SRTC main meetings. –Enhance “technical” aspect of technical committee. Michel Berdoyes presented phenolic nozzle technology at the 2010 ASM. Andrew Rettenmaier from Purdue University presented a paper on erosive burning at the 2011 JPC. –Accepting volunteers for future talks at either the JPC or ASM. Solid Rockets Text Book –Dr. Frederick reports that draft chapters and problems have been written. –The SRTC needs to establish a champion and supporting committee with a desire and competency to see this completed. 5 5 Future Ideas Design competition at university level –The AIAA Student Activities Committee (SAC) provides guidelines and logistical structures for the technical committees to run university design competitions. TC Responsibility: identify point of contact, select topic, and provide design parameters. Scope: Semester long paper design. Topic should address the design of a system and incorporate both technical and economic parameters. Student Level: both graduate and undergraduate. Award: AIAA pays travel expenses for winning team to come to a conference to present their design. TCs are asked to provide session space for presentation. Schedule: Unfortunately, the deadline for completion proposal for this year has past. If anyone is interested in being the point of contact for next year’s competition, let me know. –Other competition models Ian Halliwell has run competitions at universities in the past. Michel Berdoyes was involved in a competition called “The Student Aerospace Challenge” for European universities. –Looking for someone to champion this effort and be the point of contact for the SAC competition next year.
