12 12 Alan Bross NFMCC Meeting January 2007 The Big Neutrino Questions  What is the origin of neutrino mass?  Did neutrinos play a role in our existence?  Did neutrinos play a role in forming galaxies?  Did neutrinos play a role in birth of the universe?  Are neutrinos telling us something about unification of matter and/or forces?  Will neutrinos give us more surprises? Big questions  tough questions to answer Is a Neutrino Factory needed in order to answer these questions?

13 13 Alan Bross NFMCC Meeting January 2007 Neutrino Factory – The Physics Case We Don’t Know – But There is a Natural Decision Point  2012 After NOvA and T2K If  13 not seen or seen at 3  Consider New Facility In order to make an informed decision wheter or not a NF is this new facitily – Will need a TDR ready at this time This defines the R&D Program

22 22 Alan Bross NFMCC Meeting January 2007 Conclusions  Neutrino Factory u Compelling case for a precision neutrino program s With present assumptions Neutrino Factory out-performs other options. However, more is needed before concluding this is the right path –What the on-going Neutrino Physics program tells us –Process must include cost and schedule considerations International Design Study  Muon Collider u New concepts improve the prospects for a multi-TeV Muon Collider s Many new ideas emerging u Front-end is the same as for a Neutrino Factory u First full simulation of required cooling has been competed The Collaboration has entered a very exciting phase

23 23 Alan Bross NFMCC Meeting January 2007 Outlook  As you are all aware, our funding situation has been very tight and remains so. u Has certainly limited what we can do  However, given our recent MUTAC reviews and the recommendations of the Advanced Accelerator R&D Panel u We are on solid ground in asking for increased funding  And at our DOE briefing meeting in March we will make a strong case to the Office of High Energy Physics to follow the AARD Panel’s recommendation
