Caltrans Initial Research Caltrans Ongoing Research on MTLS Current Caltrans Efforts using MTLS and APCS PaveM Photolog Overhead Sign Project Challenges 2

Since 2005, Caltrans has been researching the use of laser scanning Produced standards and specifications for Caltrans projects Caltrans deployed Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS) technology Control point spacing recommendations Software for point cloud generation and calibration Training sessions for Caltrans surveyors

In late 2012, Caltrans purchased a MTLS unit Joint effort between Research, Maintenance, Surveys, Design, and Construction Decreased survey time, cost, and travel delay for motorists Improved worker safety Improved visualization and enhanced project design Enabled more geo-spatial data collection Viable way to collect system wide asset management data

Two research projects Goal of the research was to be used in each Caltrans District to: Train each District on how to use MTLS Use in various climates and environmental settings to determine possible limitations Use in as many business practices as possible Roadway design support Initial engineering and environmental evaluation Asset management collection Crash investigations

Automated Pavement Condition Survey (APCS) Part of the Caltrans Pavement Management System (PaveM) Caltrans Photolog District 4 Overhead Sign Project

New “Roadway/Roadside Data Gathering, Analysis and Distribution” system will replace the Photolog system The new program will have three main components

Replication and upgrade to current equipment capabilities Enhancement of field of view of digital image capture Expansion of program to use Mobile Terrestrial LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) Scanning (MTLS)

What the project accomplished Survey-grade scan was conducted in a matter of hours Traffic impacts were reduced Detailed information was delivered before PA&ED New post processing work flow Data was presented in a web-based GIS map format The additional Benefit of the Project District 4 Surveys has a goal to use the data for future projects. Currently, three capital projects are using this same data along with the new methods of post-collection control. 21

How do we convert point cloud data to our asset management deliverables How to post-process data Need for specialty software Large file storage space requirements Long term data storage and accessibility How to disseminate the variety of data Decisions on where to store data Decisions on uniformity of reports and processing
