2 Ancient Greek philosophy and medicine (6th-4th century BC) „Medicine should take care of citizens who are physically and mentally healthy, not ill“. (Platon) Health was defined as a dynamic balance between organism and environment. Physical and social determinants of health were taken into account. Health education and public health policy was stressed.

5 Levels of prevention Primary prevention = the prevention of disease or injury: - health promotion, health education - immunization, environmental modification Secondary prevention = the early detection and prompt treatment of a disease: - screening programmes (e.g. inborn defects, PKU) - primary health care (preventive examinations) Tertiary prevention = the limitation of disability and rehabilitation from disease: - follow up care and social inclusion in mental disorders (depression, schizophrenia, addictions, etc.)
