1 8 th Grade Reading Mr. Stock

2 COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is designed to increase students reading abilities as well as prepare them for the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment. The course will provide a unique blend of teacher-directed instruction as well as practice, review, and reading strategies for fiction and nonfiction passages.

3 Texts used Ready, Set, Go, Research & Education Association; Student Workbook; The Peal, John Steinbeck; The Call of the Wild, Jack London

4 Course length The class meets two periods out of a six day cycle.

5 Materials Each student needs to bring a pencil, notebook, and workbook to class each day. Textbooks will be provided and they will stay in the classroom.

6 Course Outline MARKING PERIOD 1 Pretest Word Recognition Inferences and Conclusions Main Idea Book report - required

7 Course Outline MARKING PERIOD 2 Novel, The Pearl Apply marking period 1 concepts Reinforce and re teach weak concepts Book report – optional for extra credit

8 Course Outline MARKING PERIOD 3 Main Idea Author’s Purpose Literature, Part 1 & 2 Book report -required

9 Course Outline MARKING PERIOD 4 Novel, The Call of the Wild Apply marking period 1 & 3 concepts Reinforce and re teach weak concepts Book report – optional for extra credit

10 Grades ALL ASSIGNMENTS GIVEN AND ACTIVITIES COMPLETED ARE ASSIGNED A POINT VALUE. STUDENTS RECEIVE POINTS DEPENDING ON HOW MUCH OF THE ASSIGNMENT IS DONE CORRECTLY. A STUDENT’S MARKING PERIOD GRADE IS DETERMINED BY DIVIDING THE POINTS THEY HAVE EARNED BY THE TOTAL POSSIBLE POINTS. THIS RESULTS IN A PERCENTAGE GRADE THAT WILL APPEAR ON THEIR REPORT CARD. GRADES ARE ENTERED IN TO A COMPUTER-GRADING PROGRAM WHICH INCREASES THE ACCURACY OF THE PERCENTAGES

11 Grades CLASSWORK HOMEWORK TESTS QUIZZES CLASS PARTICIPATION (ALL OF THE FOLLOWING ARE CONSIDERED) INVOLVEMENT IN CLASS ASSIGNEMNTS COMPLETED REGULAR ATTENDANDE IN CLASS ATTITUDE AND BEHAVIOR IN CLASS

12 Grades ASSEMENT PERCENTAGES (APPROXIMATE) CLASSWORK – 35% HOMEWORK – 15% TESTS – 15% QUIZZES – 15% CLASS PARTICIPATION – 20%

13 Grades GRADING SCALE 100% - 90% = A 89% - 80% = B 79% - 70% = C 69% - 60% = D 59% and lower = F

14 Discipline CLASSROOM BEHAVIOR/ DISCIPLINE: Appropriate behavior is expected at all times. Discipline procedures follow the Bermudian Springs Middle School guidelines as posted in the agenda book. If misbehavior occurs, the discipline steps will be followed. DISCIPLINE STEPS: Warning Teacher/Student Conference Referral to Principal

15 Make up work Students must see the teacher upon his/her return to class to make arrangements for make up work. Since this class consists of a great amount of teacher-directed time, students will need to work with the teacher or another adult to make up work from an absence.

16 Late work All assignments are due at the beginning of the class on the due date. An assignment is considered late if it is not turned in when it is due. If missing work is not turned by the agreed upon date, the student will earn a zero. Students may not work on late work during instruction time. REFUSAL TO DO WORK IS NOT AN OPTION!!!
