1 Writing a Conclusion and The Call to Action (The Kicker to Your CBA)

2 The Final Paragraph: 4 components 1. Transition (use one from your list- look at the conclude/summarize categories) 2. Restated Thesis– write it in a NEW way; do not repeat key words. 3. Explanation: opinions, comments, insights: this may come from your 3 reasons…but use new language! 4. Call to Action: encourage the reader to make a difference and right the wrongs!

3 Call to Action The point: Inspire the reader to actually go out and do something to change society!

4 Call to Action The technique: Speak to the audience Ex: Get organized and write your state senators about … Use emotional language. Use humor carefully.

5 Call to Action Be the person who keeps innocent children safe. Be the leader who takes dangerous weapons from criminals. Help increase gun control, and be a patriotic American.

6 Call to Action Call television stations or start a blog. Do whatever it takes to fix the wrongs and set things right. Perhaps our sacred flag will never be burned again if you step up and take this important. action.

7 Let’s take a look at a few WHOLE conclusions; let’s see if you can pull out the 4 parts!! You’ll need a “conclusions” handout and a few diff. colors of highlighter.

8 Using your handout: for each of the three conclusions examples : Highlight the transition using one color Highlight the thesis (you can assume it’s been restated) using another color Highlight the explanation using a third color (opinions, comments, insights) Highlight the “call to action” using the same color you used for the transition Prepare to Share
