2 In Your Station Push in chairs and tables Keep cupboards and drawers closed Cut on the cutting boards, not the counters Remain in your kitchen Wondering around and hanging out in other kitchens overcrowds areas and increases the likelihood of accidents

3 Sanitation in the Kitchen Wash hands with soap and warm water before lab Clean counters, floor, tables etc. in your kitchen Wash dishes in hot soapy water, then rinse with warm water

4 Sanitation in the Kitchen Clean dish rack when dishes are all dried Must wear apron at all times! Do not taste with finger, or re-use a utensil to do so

5 Grooming and Personal Cleanliness Hair pulled or pinned back Constantly wash your hands Don’t do anything gross NoseEyes Ears etc.

6 Knife Safety in the Kitchen Hold knife properly (down and back, flat side towards you) Announce yourself “knife coming through’ Store behind faucet when waiting to wash Wash and dry knives separately Don’t stand up knife in dish rack

7 Spills Wipe up all spills immediately Use paper towel to wipe the floor Grease spills Tell teacher immediately Have somebody watch over the spill to warn others

8 Fire & Hot Oil Safety Smother small flare ups by putting the lid back on Baking soda for small flare ups Fire extinguisher (aim at the base of the fire) Know the location of the fire blanket

9 Lab Jobs Take weekly turns doing clean up jobs If you finish early help the rest of your group Each and every member of your kitchen is responsible for kitchen safety and cleanliness Don’t say “that’s not my job”

10 General Safety in the Kitchen No music / phones Always walk Clean up immediately! (Ex. Flour etc.) No Horseplay or rough housing

11 Oven Safety Turn pot handles inwards Keep flammables away from the burners (recipes, cords, towels etc.) Use wooden spoon to stir (does not transfer heat) lift saucepan lid away from you to avoid steam burns pull out oven rack when putting/removing pans in/from oven check to make sure oven/elements are off (you lose your lab marks if oven is left on!!!)

12 Oven Safety Use padded oven mitts/pot holders to handle hot dishes DO NOT USE TOWEL/APRON etc.

13 Broken Glass Procedures Use broom and dust pan if broken on the floor Damp paper towel – pick up remaining glass Place in paper bag labeled ‘broken glass’ Place on demo table and make sure I know about it

14 Working with Electrical Equipment Plug appliance in before turning it on Turn appliance off before unplugging Hold onto the plug, not the cord when unplugging the appliance Make sure hands are dry
