My Father’s Name Written by Elmer Towns (1991) Adapted by Ron Williams 4 of 12 (1-hr) classes Ridgecrest Baptist Church © 2007 Ron Williams

Keeping Perspective What is your most prized possession? What possession do you not have that you would like to have? Why do we put so much emphasis on possessions? What should be the role of possessions in our life?

El Elyon The Most High God Possessor of Heaven and Earth We need to recognize the power of Jehovah. Satan and the demons recognize Him as El Elyon, because they covet this attribute of his character.

El Elyon-Satan is jealous Satan covets and recognizes El Elyon’s power (Isa 14:12-14) and the entire world will eventually recognize this (Rev 19:16). “I will ascend into heaven” “I will exalt my throne” I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation” I will ascend above the heights of the clouds I will be like the most High (El Elyon)

El Elyon El (Elohim) or strong creator + Elyon which means most or highest. This means that he is the God of gods or the ultimate God (Gen 14:19). This indicates that HE is above everything on heaven and earth. He has the power to rule and the right to receive worship from all below Him.

El Elyon El Elyon is a name for God that is often associated with His creation. Read Gen 14:22. We need to learn from Abraham about our relationship to El Elyon. Read Acts 7:48. El Elyon is everywhere. Stephen used this name so that those around him knew that Jehovah was not limited to an earthly structure.

El Elyon Isn’t it a shame that the demons recognize El Elyon (Mark 5:7) when most of the world does not. Demons cannot help but confess El Elyon since they want to be who He is (the Creator) and possess what he has.

Concerning that which Satan covets: This same attitude might affect us by: –overachieving to win approval. –promoting ourselves in unwholesome ways. –achieving at others expense. –setting unreasonable goals. –trying to emulate someone else rather than be faithful to who El Elyon made (ourselves). El Elyon

The first use of El Elyon was by Abraham (Gen 14:22). Abrahm did not worship Melchizedek but rather His God (gentile reference). Abraham recognized the El Elyon was worthy of praise and sacrifice (tithed out of respect).

El Elyon Daniel used the name El Elyon more than any other OT character (Dan 3:26; 4:17) to relate to the Babylonians. Why? He was outside the Promised Land He realized the Temple was destroyed Gentiles controlled Israel Gentiles controlled Daniel’s circumstances. Daniel therefore prayed to the one who was Lord over Babylon and all else.

El Elyon Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego knew the Most High God. Read Daniel 3:26. Why do you think Nebuchadnezzar chose to call God by this title? Read Dan 4:29-30). Even though he recognized El Elyon he chose not to worship him

El Elyon What prevents Christians from fully worshipping El Elyon when we know of his power? –our sinful nature –lack of obedience –lack of faith in his power El Elyon is the ultimate judge of all who live (Daniel 5:5).

El Elyon David or another writer recognized the Most High God. Read Psalm 91:2. They declared that protection comes from El Elyon. When do we need protection and what was conditional about receiving this protection in the reference above?

Applications of El Elyon Satanic substitute. Satan wants to rebel against everything that is holy and godly, and to substitute himself as God. Since he cannot be the true creator, he wishes to possess all that El Elyon has already created. Satan wishes to have us worship him instead (Matthew and the temptation of Christ).

El Elyon-Applications The Process Principle. Demon possession is a process (example the Holy Spirit wants to fill us, Satan attempts to use demons to fill us with evil. In doing so, people may yield to the influence; the speed of this process may accelerate; possession rates differ by individuals; possessed individuals are attempting to please their master

El Elyon-Applications The Tithing Principle The tithe is an outward sign of an inward gift of oneself to God. Why is tithing important. It allows us to recognize all we have is from El Elyon. HE demands our all.

El Elyon-Application The Possession Principle (to be HIS) Because El Elyon is the Most High God, we should: –yield to him –seek his blessings –obey his commands

El Elyon- Ultimately Since God is the 3 in 1, Jesus Christ is El Elyon. He is –Creator –Sustainer –Possessor of heaven and earth Read Phil 2:10-11. He will eventually be recognized.

How do I respond What are ways we can individually respond to El Elyon? What are ways we can do this in a corporate manner (Ridgecrest Baptist Church) What are ways we as a society can respond?
