LT: I can analyze a documentary about Jared Diamond’s theory of Geographic Luck to understand the concept better. Entry Task: Name the monuments in the pictures and state what civilization they are from! 

Discuss with a partner the notes you took during the documentary. Did you have the same notes or different?

Jared Diamond refers to the people of New Guinea as “among the world’s most culturally diverse and adaptable people in the world”, yet they have much less than modern Americans. Diamond has developed a theory about what has caused these huge discrepancies among different countries, and he says it boils down to geographic luck. Give several examples from the film to support Diamond’s theory.

What was the fundamental problem with hunting? Not Productive (takes time and no certainty) What is the radical shift in human behavior? Farming (began controlling nature)

One factor depends on another factor. The second factor depends on another factor. The third factor depends on the first factor. Creates a loop! What was the loop discussed in the video?

How did the movement of the early civilizations of the Fertile Crescent (Middle East) further support Diamond’s idea that geography played a key role in the success of a civilization?

Is Jared Diamond correct when he says of a civilizations ability to gain power, wealth, and strength, “…what’s far more important is the hand that people have been dealt, the raw materials they’ve had at their disposal.” Why or why not? Write a claim statement answering this question? (just the argument statement – 1 sentence) ON A SEPARATE PIECE OF PAPER!

Trade your papers with a partner. Grade your partners claim statement based on the rubric. Include your own reasoning underneath their claim statement 4 - Exceeding Standard (10) 3 – Meeting Standard (8.5) 2 – Approaching Standard (7.5) 1 – Below Standard (6.5) Claim (CCSS WHST 9- 10.1a)  Meeting Standard and…  Claim synthesizes all evidence pieces into a cohesive and effective sentence  Answers a question, defends a position, or explain thinking clearly  No “I think/believe” statements  Attempts to answer a question, defend a position, or explain thinking, but is not clearly conveyed  Uses “I think/believe” statements  Does not answer a question, defend a position, or explain thinking.

Look at how your partner graded your claim statement. How could you improve based on the rubric? Rewrite your claim statement to move up the rubric. 4 - Exceeding Standard (10) 3 – Meeting Standard (8.5) 2 – Approaching Standard (7.5) 1 – Below Standard (6.5) Claim (CCSS WHST 9-10.1a)  Meeting Standard and…  Claim synthesizes all evidence pieces into a cohesive and effective sentence  Answers a question, defends a position, or explain thinking clearly  No “I think/believe” statements  Attempts to answer a question, defend a position, or explain thinking, but is not clearly conveyed  Uses “I think/believe” statements  Does not answer a question, defend a position, or explain thinking.
