Probability Events: In the language of probability, something that could or has happened is called an event. The following are all events: 2. Getting a 6 when you throw a die. 1. A mother giving birth to a baby girl. 4. Winning the national lottery Jackpot. 3. Being born in March. 5. Leaves falling off the trees in autumn. 6. Getting a 4 when you spin the pointer. 4 3 6 2 5

Probability Events: If it is impossible for an event to happen then it is given a value of 0 on the start of the probability line. If an event is certain to happen then it is given a value of 1 at the end of the probability line. 0 Impossible 1 Certain even chance poor chance good chance The probability of most events happening lie between these two extremes and could be described as having an even chance, a poor chance or a good chance. 2. Getting a 4 on the spinner. 1. A mother giving birth to a baby girl. 4. Leaves falling off the trees in autumn. 3. Getting a 7 on the spinner. 5. Getting a 6 on the die. 6. Winning the National Lottery Jackpot. 4 4 6 4 54 4 6 4 54 4 6 4 5 Describe the probability of each of the following events happening.

Probability Outcomes The probability of an event happening can be located accurately on the probability line if we know all of the possible outcomes that can occur. Listing Outcomes: Make a list of all possible outcomes for the following events. The outcomes for these events are equally likely. 1. Throwing a die. 2. Tossing a coin. 3. Spinning the pointer. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 Six outcomes Head, Tail Two outcomes Blue, red, yellow, green, white Five outcomes
