2 An Excellent Student Experience? Examples of a an excellent student learning experience? – Taught by staff who are know their subject, are up to date and are inspirational – A well planned relevant challenging and curriculum – A well organised course – Clear understanding of what is required in assessment and what criteria will be used in marking assessments – A timely return of assessments and sufficient feedback – Additional guidance and support provided where required – Opportunities to achieve and progress including work experience – Sufficient learning resources

3 Examples of a poor Student Academic Experience? Not getting a timetable until week 4 of the term Turning up to a lecture theatre and no tutor Having three assignment to hand in at the same time Not getting your assignment marks back for 3 months Emailing your lecturer about a problem and not getting a reply Having a different lecturer each week Lecturers who are not that interested in their subject

4 The things that make up your academic experience

5 Course reps are students elected by students for students. Course Reps talk with their students in order to: – Improve the student academic experience by developing solutions to problems and issues raised – Represent students at the course and subject level – Provide both positive and constructive feedback to the University and department staff – Provide a vital link between the staff, students and the Students’ Union Course reps are trained to make sure they know how to deal with these things They are able to sit on different University committees in order to create change

6 They talk with students on their course to find out if the course is going well They consult students about anything that is not working properly Present findings on these consultations to staff at meetings or between meetings Let staff know about the things that are going well too! Feedback to students on how their problems or concerns are being dealt with Work with staff to develop solutions Follow up if agreed solutions have not been implemented Attend meetings and training with other reps to share ideas and develop campaigns

7 Enhance your communication, negotiation and research skills Opportunity to complete an accredited module on personal development associated with the course rep role Improve your CV and your future employability The opportunity to improve your course and the University Enable you to gain the knowledge and skills to become a Student Voice Rep and get a bursary You might win a student experience award!!!

8 After this presentation fill out a self-nomination form and hand it to your programme leader Let the rest of your course know why you want to represent them If an election is needed persuade those on your course to elect you Visit the Course Rep pages for Newport Campuses on the Students Union website If you need further information come and have a chat with either Peter or Verity about the position in the SU If you are elected your course leader will contact the SU, you will then need to register as a course rep at the Students’ Union

9 Initial course rep training dates Caerleon Campus – 27 th October 2014 – 2.00 to 5.00 City Campus – 29 th October 2014 – 9.00 to 12:30 Further dates will be announced in due course (Reps need to book a place with the SU)

10 Student Voice Reps Replace Faculty Board Reps Represent student views at higher levels in University Work closely course reps SVRs sit on the boards and committees in University Appointed not elected but appointed after interview Receive scholarships (£400 post grad or £750 undergrad a year) Applications must be in by: Wednesday 8 th October 2014
