Diegetic Sound This is the type of sound that would be recorded when someone is filming, the sound that you can hear when filming. An example would be that someone has turned a door handle in the scene and it is heard as it is, but in post-production it can be enhanced so it is heard clearly. Diegetic sound is a popular type for cinematographers because it shows they haven’t used many sound effects and it also one of the easiest out of all the sounds to add to the film.

Non-Diegetic Sound This is a type of sound that is put into post-production to make the film sound better and make the continuity of the film work, because if there is a creature in the film that needs a distinct sound, this would make the sound for it and make the film more effective.

Sound Bridging This type of sound is hard to make work if you are an amateur filmmaker. Sound Bridging is where you have one scene attached to the next scene by the sound. An example would be that if you have a scene that is inside and at the end of it you hear outdoors sounds and people talking you can guess that the next scene will be outside and focusing on two people. The point in this sound is so the viewer can get an idea on what the next scene is and/or about.

Sound Effects Sound effects are recorded sounds, either primarily made or found on the internet if you are unable to do it yourself. Sound effects are the type of sounds that enhance the sound in the film to make it more effective, so they live up to their name. Sound effects can be recorded using a microphone, voice recorder or in a studio because all depends on how you want the sound to come out.

Voiceovers A voiceover is generally used in documentaries. This is where someone has been recorded beforehand to narrate over a montage of images or film footage and they would also have an idea of what to say. This is popular among documentaries because out of all the genres in cinematography it’s the easiest to put it over and most films don’t have narration as they are mainly fiction.
