Inductive reasoning Starts with observations Ends with a conclusion Joe carries a gun to work. Joe wears a uniform. Joe drives a black and white car. Therefore: Joe is a police officer

Deductive reasoning Begins with a hypothesis (thesis) Support follows hypothesis Joe is a police officer. (This is shown by:) Joe carries a gun to work. Joe wears a uniform. Joe drives a black and white car.

Counterargument: How to Your thesis: Vegetarianism is the best lifestyle because it is healthy, it is eco-friendly, and it is popular. What would a person who disagrees with you say? – Why would they think it’s NOT the best lifestyle? Your counterargument can be factual or hypothetical. – You can mention what a real person says in opposition to your view, or… – You can imagine what someone might say as they oppose you.

Step 1: Opposition’s views (Turn against) Introduce the opposition’s views = signal words + opposition’s opinion. Use specific signal words to show that these views are NOT yours. Examples of signal words: – Some people think… – My opposition believes… – Many may say..

Step 1: Opposition’s views (Turn against) Be specific with the opposition’s opinion: – Some people disagree with me. –  Not effective. Explain WHY they disagree with you. Some people feel that vegetarianism is a waste of money because vegetables cost too much. In fairness to the opposition, you should adequately explain what they think/feel/believe. Do not distort or misrepresent what they believe or what is realistic to anticipate they may believe.

Step 2: Respond to opposition (Turn back) Your thesis: Vegetarianism is the best lifestyle because it is healthy, it is eco-friendly, and it is popular. Opposition’s view: Some people feel that vegetarianism is a waste of money because vegetables cost too much.

Step 2: Respond to opposition (Turn back) Opposition’s view: Some people feel that vegetarianism is a waste of money because vegetables cost too much. Acknowledge: Possible response 1 – I understand – It is understandable – I can sympathize Explain: Why/how do you understand? I understand that finances are a concern for everyone, regardless of their dietary preferences.

Step 2: Respond to opposition (Turn back) Opposition’s view: Some people feel that vegetarianism is a waste of money because vegetables cost too much. Refute: Possible response 2 – They are incorrect – That view is mistaken – They are wrong Explain: Why/how do you believe they are wrong? They are wrong, however, because many markets, like the 99 Cent Only store, offer vegetables at a steep discount.

Step 2: Respond to opposition (Turn back) Opposition’s view: Some people feel that vegetarianism is a waste of money because vegetables cost too much. Concede: Possible response 3 – They have a good point – That is an excellent argument – I agree with them Explain: Why/how do you agree with them? They have a good point because many fruits and vegetables are expensive, especially if they’re not in season.

Step 2: Respond to opposition (Turn back) Wait! We’re not done! With concession, you must still show that the opposition is wrong in some way. They have a good point because many fruits and vegetables are expensive, especially if they’re not in season. However, frozen and canned vegetables are just as nutritious as fresh vegetables, and they’re much less expensive.
