Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility Page 1 FNAL/JLab weekly meeting, April 23, 2014 Agenda  Path Forward  Status at FNAL  Status at JLab  SSC cable shipping  Next Visit to FNAL  Others

Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility Page 2 FNAL/JLab weekly meeting, April 23, 2014 CLAS12 Torus CCM Fabrication Plan Forward April 23, 2014 Latifa Elouadrhiri Control Account Manager For the JLab TORUS team FNAL/JLab TORUS team weekly meeting Wednesday April 23, 2014

Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility Page 3 FNAL/JLab weekly meeting, April 23, 2014 High Level Plan 1.Continue VPI process with copper foils and tubes on coil structures as designed 2.Proceed with CCM002 potting after detailed revised procedure and successful MRR review 3.Start AES buffing T2 conductor for a potential practice coil 4.CCM003 on hold until we have a successful potting process

Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility Page 4 FNAL/JLab weekly meeting, April 23, 2014 Steps Technical Report –Findings (Mark & George Velev) Practice coil potting CCM 001 potting –JLab Recommendations on the process (at three levels: Requirements, Recommendations and Suggestions) FNAL develop updated procedure and distribute for review – CTD, External Consultants and JLab Complete a full batch resin mixing, degassing and pot life test at FNAL (objectives: quantify pot life and do a full run of injection/flow system minus actual coil) Lessons learned plus Jlab Recommendation FNAL to develop new/final procedure – if significant changes repeat full batch tests JLab organize VPI Manufacturing Readiness Review (MRR) – At FNAL, with Jlab engineers, management and external reviewers After successful review start potting of CCM2

Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility Page 5 FNAL/JLab weekly meeting, April 23, 2014 CCM2 VPI Plan All VPI procedural steps will be implemented! –Tooling and processes –Full Documentation processes included and full time JLab oversight Design changes to CCM003 are: –Holes in outer Cu and G10 –Extra strips of glass at G10 Notes: 1)Most of these can not be put on CCM002 2)These can only make CCM003 VPI more easily and completely and easier for NDT

Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility Page 6 FNAL/JLab weekly meeting, April 23, 2014 Parallel Activities with prep and potting of CCM002 Develop Diagnostics for void finding Develop techniques that will allow installation of cooling tubes and foils after potting without those items –This will allow direct visual inspection of the coil pack VPI quality (both sides) before continuing Develop a test plan for CCM002 with all tests that can be run non-destructively, and in a reasonable timeframe (e.g., void detection, electrical tests, etc.)

Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility Page 7 FNAL/JLab weekly meeting, April 23, 2014 Timeline Develop JLab technical Report - Draft 4/25 –Findings – (George & Mark) 4/25 Practice coil potting CCM 001 potting –Develop JLab recommendations for FNAL Review Draft by 4/25, FNAL Comments Back 4/30 Final version issued 5/2 FNAL develop updated procedure incorporating Jlab recommendations and distribute for review – CTD, Consultants, JLab –Draft by 5/6 –Complete a formal review by 5/9 Complete a full batch resin mixing, degassing and pot life test at FNAL (objectives: quantify pot life and do a full run of injection/flow system minus actual coil) Use actual mixing and degassing system and procedures with 70cm mold –Test complete by 5/16 MRR – At FNAL, JLab and external reviewers 5/22 Pot CCM2 – Start setup 5/26 after successful review and implementation of the review recommendations

Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility Page 8 FNAL/JLab weekly meeting, April 23, 2014 CCM001 Plans Work with JLab to develop other NDT techniques and use CCM001 as platform to try these alternate techniques (e.g., time domain reflectometry) Request FNAL to remove outer copper sheet and try thermal imaging method to detect voids (depends on what we think of the coil as is) Repair voids if found using NDT techniques or by visual inspection Develop and test the cooling tube and foil replacement technique that will be needed as part of any coil repair Put in a coil case and perform final potting Ship to JLab – 80K test and 4K test (only if coil is qualified)

Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility Page 9 FNAL/JLab weekly meeting, April 23, 2014 THANK YOU
