Starts at a young age. 3)Propaganda/Censorship – Control all media: nothing is allowed to exist without gov. OK. 4)Religion/Ethnic Persecution – Creates “enemies of the state” as scapegoats: usually religious or ethnic groups and subject to terror and violence.

How did he do it?  1) Built a Police State to maintain power.  Monitored phone lines, read mail and planted informants  2) Great Purge – 1937-38, a campaign of terror to eliminate anyone (Bolsheviks) that threatened his power  Began with “show trials”  Executed “guilty” or sent them to forced labor camps – “Gulags”
