3 T IMETABLES /D AILY R OUTINES Enter class through door onto playground Teachers are available at the end of the day for parent queries; if you have something urgent in the morning please see the phase leader Mrs Walters at the main infant entrance who will pass on the information. Doors open at 8.50, and shut promptly at 9 am. Please go to office if you are later than this. School day ends at 3.20. Teachers will keep children until 3.30. After this they are taken to the main office where they are entered into the late book, and wait with DSP. After school clubs – collect from office Show and tell will be on a Friday afternoon before or after Golden time. Each child will be given a turn every half term.

4 B REAK TIMES Morning playtime is at 10.30-10.45. KS1 children can go to the canteen to buy drinks. Fruit is provided free of charge. Please send water bottles into school each day, and ensure they contain water. Drinks will be no more than 50p so please avoid sending any more than this each day. Children MUST have a named purse that they will keep in their drawer and will be expected to look after at break time. Children should not take food from lunchboxes at playtimes. Please provide a named thin colouring book and crayons or colouring pencils for you child to keep in their drawer for use at wet playtimes. Afternoon play is at 2:45 – 3:00

5 U NIFORM Grey or black skirt/trousers White shirts/polo tops – school logo Burgundy sweatshirts/jumpers – school logo Black sensible shoes Suitable winter coat – school fleece. Please make sure your child knows where their name is on their clothing!! ALL NAMED PLEASE!

6 P.E. Navy shorts or track suit bottoms White t-shirt (with House colour edging) Lightweight pumps must be worn for apparatus work Trainers can be worn for outdoor games No jewellery or watches (can write disclaimer letter and take full responsibility) Long hair tied back PE Days – until half term 1H- Wednesday and Thursday 1OM-Wednesday and Friday 1S- Monday and Wednesday

7 First half term Early Years Foundation style teaching, gradually moving to more formal subject based lessons. Communication in Year 1 will continue with a year group email. Send your preferred email address to Year1@harborne.bham.sch.uk Main channels of contact will be letters in book bag, notices on door, school newsletter and text messaging. Birthdays celebrated on day in assembly whenever possible. No sweets, cakes etc. because of Healthy Schools status. Certificates, trophies, medals etc. are celebrated during Wednesday assembly. 9 G ROUPS Grouped across Year 1 for phonics Ability groupings for some Maths and Literacy activities within classes. Mixed ability groupings for most other curriculum subject areas.

10 R EADING All children to bring book bags in every day Two reading scheme books and a choice book each week All children have a Reading Diary in which to record reading. It is important that you write in this diary when you read at home with your child in order for us to assess the level of support given. Literacy volunteers Please ensure your child knows to pass on letters if you have put them in their book bag. Please do not put water bottles in book bags!

11 L EARNING B EYOND THE C LASSROOM : H OW CAN I HELP MY CHILD ? READING!!!! Read to your child as well as with them. Be active, give them experiences. Keep it hands on and practical and most of all FUN!!! Talk to your child. Build it into everyday experiences e.g. shopping, chores, walking/driving home from school etc. Not too much technology!!

12 H OMEWORK Read as often, and as widely as possible. Reading books and rocket words if applicable Work to support our topics (occasional) ActiveLearn – games for use at home When appropriate we will send home a practical maths game/activity to support learning in the classroom. Phonics – reading and spelling activities as appropriate during the year. Handwriting – letter and number formation Spring term – Maths races with number bonds.

13 H ELPING IN S CHOOL We welcome parent helpers in Year 1, and many parents come to help in school with a range of activities e.g. Reading Literacy Volunteers Trips Admin e.g. filing If helpers are coming in regularly we will need to make arrangements for them to be DBS checked through the school, even if already DBS checked somewhere else. All helpers or visitors should come through main school office and be signed in officially.
