Quiz After reading the extract, what do you think about Ralph? There may be more than one answer. I think he is not being very sensitive to Piggy’s feelings. What about your answer?

Character analysis Ralph Ralph is the athletic, charismatic protagonist of Lord of the Flies. He was elected by the boys at the beginning of the novel. Ralph was different from most of the boys, who only wanted to play. He instead thought about building huts for the boys to stay in and making a signal fire to try to attract the attention of the ship for rescue. Because of this he had a secure control over the boys for the beginning of the novel.

Jack Jack is a strong-willed boy with a lot of ego. His main desire is power. At the beginning of the novel he is furious when he lost the election to Ralph. Jack still had the moral propriety and behavior that society instilled in him at the beginning and this can be shown from the novel when he hesitated to kill the Pig. But his character changed throughout the novel.

Piggy: Piggy’s nickname came from his appearance. He is a matured and smart boy who thought about using the conch to summon the boys and using his spectacles to start a fire. Piggy is obsessed with the signal-fire because he wants to return to England where adults are. This is also because the fire is one of the only symbols of order on the island.

Themes of LOTF -- In Chapter 1, civilization is still present in the boys. -1. Most of the children voted for Ralph to be their chief instead of Jack, showing that they were still civilized, compared to the later part of the story where they defected to Jack and turned to savagery. “ “Who wants Jack for chief?” With dreary obedience the choir raised their hands. “Who wants me?” Every hand outside the choir raised their hands.” ( Pg. 30 ) ‏

Civilization VS Savagery -2. When Jack, Simon and Ralph were out surveying the island to ensure there were no other inhabitants, they saw a piglet trapped in a curtain of creepers. Wanting something to eat, Jack tried to kill the pig with a knife, but he hesitated and stopped, allowing the pig to escape. -”..Jack drew his blade with a flourish. He raised his arm in the air. There came a pause…Then the piglet tore loose from the creepers and scurried into the undergrowth.” ( Pg. 40 ) ‏

Civilization VS Savagery cont. -3. Piggy and Ralph held a meeting to know the names of the other boys who had just met them, and when the boys wanted a leader, they held a vote to select him. This is an example of civilization as verbal communication is used. - “No. We’re having a meeting. Come and join in.” ( Pg. 27 ) ‏ “ “Shut up,” said Ralph absently. He lifted the conch. “seems to me we ought to have a chief to decide things.”…The dark boy, Roger, stirred at last and spoke up. “Let’s have a vote.” ( Pg 30 ) ‏

The loss of innocence - 1. When Ralph and Piggy were chatting with each other when they first met, Ralph played around in the water and blew a jet of water in the air, showing that they were still innocent, unlike in the later chapters. “Ralph paddled backwards down the slope, immersed his mouth and blew a jet of water into the air. Then he lifted his chin and spoke.” ( Pg 19 ) ‏

The loss of innocence cont. - 2. When Ralph said that his father was going to rescue him, he was very confident about it and was only a little deterred when Piggy told him that an atom bomb had been dropped, showing that they were still innocent unlike in the later chapters. “ “When’ll your dad rescue us?”.. “Soon as he can.”.. “How does he know we are here?”.. “ They’d tell him at the airport.”..”Didn’t you hear about the atom bomb? They’re all dead.” Ralph pulled himself out of the water.. and considered this unusual problem.” ( Pg 20 ) ‏

Important symbols in chapter 1 -The Conch It is a powerful symbol of civilized authority and order. In chapter 1, Ralph uses it to attract the attention of the other boys on the island so that they can gather at the location where Ralph and the others were and have a meeting. It was also an object that had the power of political legitimacy and democracy.

The conch cont. As shown from page 30, “ But there was a stillness about Ralph as he sat that marked him out: there was his size, and attractive appearance; and most obscurely, yet most powerfully, there was the conch.” Thus, it shows that it had the ability to most likely enable the person holding it have the influence to be the leader.

The Island Before the arrival of the boys, it was the garden of Eden, lush, beautiful, radiating a calm and serene mood and atmosphere, as shown from page 17, where there were young palm trees that were cooling and could shade whoever sat on them from the sun. The trees, when dried, fell to the ground and formed “a criss-cross pattern of trunks very comfortable to sit on“, and the water which was “clear to the bottom and bright with the efflorescence of tropical weed and coral”. However, at the end of the story, it had transformed into a parallel of the corrupted world of mankind.

Events in chapter 1 1. A boy with fair hair reaches a lagoon, where he soon meets a boy trapped by creepers wearing a greasy wind-breaker and plump. 2. The fair boy introduces himself as Ralph, while the plump boy tells Ralph his nickname, Piggy, and tells him not to anyone else of it. 3. Ralph tells Piggy that his father will come and rescue them, while Piggy does not believe it as he heard that and atom bomb had killed everyone.

Events in chapter 1 cont. 4. Ralph spots a conch in the water and uses it to try to summon other people. Johnny, three other boys, the twins Sam and Eric, Jack, Simon and the choir arrives at Ralph’s location. 5. Ralph decides that a chief was needed to decide how to ensure that they could be rescued. Jack demands that he should be chief, being the chapter chorister and head boy. 6. A vote is decided to choose the chief. Ralph wins the vote and becomes chief, while Jack is in charge of the hunters.

Events in chapter 1 cont. 7. Ralph, Simon and Jack decide to survey the place to ensure that it was an island and they were the only inhabitants, and are amazed by the different and exotic plants and reefs. 8. They find out where they landed, and decide to hunt for food. They spot a piglet ensnared by creepers and decide to kill it for food. 9. Jack hesitates and is unable to kill the piglet, allowing it to escape.

Literary devices 8. Diction In The Lord of the Flies, Golding’s language is neutral. However, it is simple and it is as if he is telling the story himself rather than writing prose. The vocabulary and sentence structure are simply and easy to understand. Golding uses a lot of imagery and symbolic devices.

Diction “The three boys walked briskly on the sand. The tide was low and there was a strip of weed-strewn beach that was almost as firm as a road. A kind of glamour was spread over them and the scene and they were conscious of the glamour and made happy by it. They turned to each other, laughing excitedly, talking, not listening. The air was bright. Ralph, forced by the task of translating all this into an explanation, stood on his head and fell over. When they had done laughing, Simon stroked Ralph’s arm shyly; and they had to laugh again.” (pg. 33)

Simile “the lagoon was still as a mountain lake” (pg 14) ‏ A simile is used in the first chapter: “there was a strip of weed-strewn beach that was almost as firm as a road.” (pg 33) ‏ Through these 2 similes we can see that Golding is trying create imagery.
