What they ate In NightJohn they ate from a trough and they didn’t have nutritious meals. The had cornbread, pork fat, butter milk and other things.

How they lived In the book NightJohn, the slaves often slept on the floor and on the dirt. They weren't giving proper living quarters, and they weren’t treated well.

Punishment Many slaves tried to run away and they were often caught. The owners of the slaves let their dogs chase after the slaves and bite them. Then if the dogs didn’t kill them, the owners would chain them up and whip them and they would eventually bleed to death.

In NightJohn the two of the slaves got married and they ran away together. They had to get a pass from their owner but instead they forged Waller’s signature and they ran away.

Many slaves were tied up and beaten for not working hard enough.

In NightJohn one story Mammy told was about how a old slave ran away. She said that the man got tired of having to do everything that Waller said. Then one day the man ran away but, Waller found out and let the dogs chase after him. The dogs were right on the old man’s trail, and the old man climbed a tree so that the dogs couldn’t get to him, but the old man didn’t climb high enough. The dogs jumped up and tore at the man’s legs, and he ended up bleeding to death.

To pass the time the slaves often sang songs and played games.
