2 2 Teachers Ask: What Can I Do With Internet2? The more easily they can find the answer, the faster our growth in use, the more everyone benefits from Internet2 We also need a way of publicizing new resources, getting the word out quickly and widely Just as we don’t want multiple email systems, we don’t want multiple means of finding resources for teaching – and the array of Internet2 and commodity resources overlap a great deal –Therefore need to provide an integrated resource locating mechanism for both Internet2 and commodity Internet

3 3 What Resources Would Be Referenced? Sites with relevant rich media, especially video Museums, zoos, performing arts centers, presidential libraries,…, for content or for interactive virtual tours Remote scientific and lab instruments, simulations of machinery, immersive environments, … Content experts, other teachers, classrooms ready to share in distant learning exchanges (eg for language learning),…, via two-way interactive video Learning courseware, modules Large-scale computation, database, visualization grids (eg Visible Human) Sites providing lesson plans, guides to above resources

4 4 Can We Each Do This On Our Own? Let’s do a project in which we work together in meeting this need, so that we: –minimize redundant effort across SEGPs/States –do a better job overall –make new resources quickly and widely known, as they become available Whether to participate, and the level of participation, should be at the discretion of each SEGP/State

5 5 Suggested Approach Gather those interested to discuss, plan Form a resource reference and search system (clearinghouse) building from existing services –Michigan Teacher Network (mtn.merit.edu) –IDEAS (ideas.wisconsin.edu) –A few others to be identified, with complimentary resources – using a distributed, expandable architecture Identify Internet2 resources, relate to curriculum Add ability to facilitate use (eg authentication, authorization) Allow customization to state needs (if desired) –Front end that reflects local interests, special resources –Referenced to that state’s curriculum standards

6 6 Issues Funding –Building upon existing services provides an immediate foundation and momentum –We would seek to identify additional funds, to enhance the services Effectiveness –Resource quality is crucial – always use content reviewers –Must be up-to-date – substantial time spent re-checking, pruning out stagnant sites, … –Focused – link to curriculum standards, provide other search categories and methods –Fast – design and equip for snappy response
