4 Simplifying Expressions (combining like terms) TSWBAT: combine like terms. 3/13/2016 Heading Students use properties of numbers to demonstrate whether assertions are true or false.

5 Notes Like Terms = terms in an expression that have the same variable raised to the same power. You may only combine terms that are ALIKE. Determine if the terms are alike. Ex. Yes Ex. Yes Ex. No Now you try. Ex. No Ex. Yes Ex. No

6 Notes Simplify the expression. Ex. Are these like terms? Yes! If you have 3 apples and add 4 apples, how many apples do you have? Ex. Are these like terms? Yes! If you have 8 bananas and lose 2 bananas, how many bananas do you have? Now you try.

7 Notes Simplify the expression. Ex. Are these like terms? Yes! If you have 6 dollars and owe 11 dollars, where are you at? Ex. Are these like terms? NO! NO! NO! If you have 9 apples and 2 bananas, you CAN’T combine them! Now you try.

8 Notes Simplify the expression. Ex. Are these like terms? NO! NO! NO! If you have 7 DVDs and 4 CDs, you CAN’T combine them. Ex. Are these like terms? NO! NO! NO! One term has a variable, the other does not. You CAN’T combine them. Now you try.
