Review What are some of the key elements of evangelism that we have looked at in the Old Testament, in John, and in Acts? With a partner, think of 3 for each section.

Notes from Class OT: God's Call, Israel as an example, Community, and Jonah John: The Incarnation/Jesus was sent, Jesus went to the Samaritans, Love and Justice, A Whole Life/Lifestyle approach Acts: Togetherness/Community, Separation/Sending, Prayer and the Holy Spirit

More Class Notes What do you think is important to do when evangelizing? Using opportunities, Relationships, 1 Corinthians 13: love, interesting in the other person, 1 Peter 2 – holy living, a new creation (2 Cor. 5)

Risk The martyrdom of Stephen caused the church to spread, out from Jerusalem and Judea and into Samaria. First Samaritans, then Gentiles, became Christians. (Acts 8-11)

Questions to Ask Ourselves "Where is my Jerusalem? Where do I feel comfortable and useful and unthreatened?" “Where is my Samaria? Who are the people who, in my book, are not quite kosher? They probably strike me as being okay in some ways, but in others I just don't feel comfortable around them.”

Questions to Ask Ourselves Finally, “Who are my Gentiles? Who are those people with whom I feel I have nothing in common, around whom I would probably feel thoroughly uncomfortable?” Then I find myself asking: “Who is my circumcision party? What are the voices, either internal or external, that say: 'Don't do it. I've never done that before. I'm not comfortable with that. They're too different from me. It's too scary.'?”

The Holy Spirit The Holy Spirit was present in the early church. He guided the believers. It says that the believers were 'filled with the Holy Spirit'. Luke also uses the word 'filled' with things like jealousy (5:17), joy (13:52), and rage (19:28). It has the idea of being under the control of something, our actions guided by the emotion/feeling. So it was with the believers and the Spirit – they gave themselves to God and were guided by Him.

So, how do we get to be filled?

Now what? What is the most important thing you learned today? Will anything change for you this week? What do you think that you, with God's help, can do differently? Are you praying for someone? How have things been going with that person?
