3. Xerxes attempts to flee
After the crushing defeat at Salamis, Xerxes flees back to lands in control of the Persian empire across the Hellespont bridges
Parts of the bridges had been wrecked in a terrible storm and the Greeks burn the rest of the bridges shortly after finding them
Xerxes left most of his army in Greece with orders to wait out the winter and attack in the spring

5. Athens and Sparta unite again?
When spring arrived, the Persians approached Athens again with plans to conquer the other city-states including Sparta
The Spartans feared that the Athenians could be convinced to join the Persians now that their city had been burned to the ground
The Athenians boldly declare that they will help the Spartans due to their “common brotherhood with the Greeks”

7. The Battle of Plataea
While the Athenians and Spartans both fought at Thermopylae, this was the first time that they would stand side by side on the battlefield
In 479 B.C.E., the final battle took place outside Plataea and 80,000 Greeks managed to defeat the Persian army for good
This victory preserved Greek ideas and the Greeks would rebuild Athens bigger and better than ever before
