The Persian Wars! Greece vs. Persia. A fight to the finish. All notes that have to be written are in RED . . .

The Persian army was HUGE! Well, they won because the Greeks had the “phalanx”. Duh.

Athens VS Persians Athenians were outnumbered 2-1 Darius was defeated by Athens and their use of the phalanx. Pheidippides- ran 26 miles to Athens to declare the victory

14 What you need to know about… The Battle of Thermopylae
Sparta VS Persia Persia led by Xerxes Sparta led by King Leonidas Sparta lost all lives with little help from other Greeks Meanwhile- King Themistocles of Athens was building warships to fight Xerxes in Athens.

…Because Xerxes burned Athens to the ground.

17 What you need to know about… The Battle of Salamis
Thanks to the Spartans the rest of Greece were able to get prepared for the invasion. Persian ships were big and slow while the Athenians could move quickly in the small strait. Greece destroys Persian fleet Important because without the fleet no supplies for land army.

18 479: The Battle of Plataea But they’ll be okay... for a while….
A.K.A. The last straw for the Persian’ invasion of Greece! But they’ll be okay... for a while….

19 What you need to know about… Battle of Plataea
Greeks unite and fight Persia’s remaining land army. Greeks win and Persia never attacks again.

20 The aftermath a.k.a Effects of the War
Both Athens and Sparta claim credit for victory over Persia = led to problems Sparta was still very weak after Thermopylae Athens emerges as the most powerful city-state (bully) Athens creates the Delian League (alliance with other city states to protect themselves if Persia ever returns) Athens rebuilds their city-state better than ever before and they experience a GOLDEN AGE.
