Lyn Richards Chapter Five - Coding Erlinda Teniente- Valderas and Kalpana Mukunda Iyengar

Definition of coding “Generates new ideas and gathers material by topic” (p.93) Establishes a way to organize gathered data Helps find patterns Connects application to theory

Types of Coding Quantitative Qualitative Reduces Data Goal ◦ To quantify information Date Retention Goal ◦ To learn from data ◦ Keep revisiting data to understand patterns and find explanations

Purposes of Qualitative Coding To reflect on coded material and understand how it ties to projects To find out how categories of data relate to other categories of data and to understand how the relation helps construct theories To gather all materials about cases in order to be able to apply information between cases To further categorize data into more specific categories To find patterns in and between categories To compare how researchers interpret data

Ways of coding Descriptive ◦ Involves storing information about the cases being studied  Example:  Information about the speaker in a case such as gender, age, and profession Topic ◦ Labeling text according to subject  Example  Topics discussed in the passage being coded Analytical ◦ Leads to theory emergence and affirmation  Example  Reflects on data collected and finding theory to making it comprehensible

Activity Coding Activity Go to the class wiki and click on your respective pages for the text to be coded Do one kind of coding only – either descriptive, topic, or analytical
