2. Aim of the movement
Anti-war was expressed in many of the art forms, surrealism was no exception
Hitler classed surrealist art as one of the degenerate arts; arts that he saw as damaging to the regime as they were apparently an attack on hard working Germans.

Surrealism was developed out of the activities of Dada of World War I
Surrealism speaks about the time after the First World War and the override of culture.

4. Key features
Surrealist art work is made to look bizarre. It tends to depict the supressed side of our mind and the world of dreams, desire, nightmares and imagination.
Typical features include dark figures and silhouettes, mythical creatures, monsters and nonsense animals, day to day objects drawn distorted or disfigured.
The art form is meant paint the picture of the subconscious mind

Served in the German army on both Western and Eastern fronts
Arrested by French authorities during WW2
Paintings usually portray landscapes with decaying buildings
