Livio Mapelli The Support Groups in PH Support to the experiments at CERN on: detector mechanics (PH-DT) electronics (PH-ESE) scientific computing tools (PH-SFT) safety, infrastructure and administration (PH-DI) The resources are used on a multi-projects basis focusing mainly on common activities for all experiments. Livio Mapelli PH-DT DT is the largest, most diversified and complex group in the Physics Department It is the result of a many-years process of re-structuring towards the optimisation of the resources made available by CERN, and necessary, to design, build and operate experiments Its mission comprises a vision into the future: research and developments of technologies for the experiments beyond today’s upgrades. 4. The future of DT – PH – CERN On Jan 1 st 2016, CERN will have a new DG The CERN DG is the absolute master of everything, as long as agreed by the Council She can change the overall structure of CERN, Sectors and Departments She will appoint Directors and Departments Heads She has one year to decide all this (From my last message to you, 05.12.2014)

5. And us, in 2015? Consolidate DT as part of an overall PH consolidation, so that the new management will find a solid and functioning reality, something to possibly improve, not a problem to fix urgently This is the task I have given myself for my last 12 months as PH Department Head The tuning of the DT organisation under preparation is an essential part (From my last message to you, 05.12.2014)

6. Livio Mapelli DT Organization Adjustment With the end of LS1, we have entered a new phase of the Organization where multiple responsibilities overlap: LHC operation and consolidation Construction of Detector Upgrades for LS2 Development studies and detector projects for HL-LHC (LS3) Non-LHC, Energy Frontier and Diversity programs PH-DT is/will be involved in most projects above PH-DT - CERN - 14 October 20156

7. Livio Mapelli DT Organization Adjustment The reorganization of DT is the continuation of a process that started in 2012 The main goals remain: Centralization of expertise, to provide an integral approach for detector design and technical support at all phases of the projects Flexibility Development and retention of know-how PH-DT - CERN - 14 October 20157
