1 How to Tell the Difference
GOOD TOUCH/BAD TOUCH How to Tell the Difference Today we are talking about touches and feelings we get from touches. Talking about touches and feelings is very important, because it helps us to be safe. Developed and designed by Mary Jo Sampson, Director of Religious Education, St. John the Baptist Catholic Church

2 What do they mean? Touches and Feelings
Why is it important to know the difference between a good touch and a bad touch? What message does our feelings send us?

3 FEELINGS Sad Afraid Ashamed Angry Embarrassed
What does your face look like when you are sad, angry, embarrassed, afraid, or ashamed? Can you name some things that make you feel sad, afraid, ashamed, angry, and embarrassed? When you feel ashamed, do you feel like hiding your face?

4 Who can tell me what ashamed means?
Do you remember how you felt when you broke something by accident, but you did not tell anyone? Sometimes when someone else touches us in a way they should not, we may feel ashamed. We may also feel scared. We might decide not to tell anyone because we are afraid we may get into trouble and we are ashamed. Do you feel bad about yourself?

5 Good Touch A good touch for me is when someone gives me a hug and says hi. What about you? Have students name at least four good touches such as a kiss, a pat on the back, a handshake etc.

6 Bad Touch Bad touch for me is when someone hits me. What about you?
Have class name four bad touches such as kicking, slapping, pinching, or being touched where you are not supposed to.

7 How many of us like hugs, kisses, and touches from people we know, love, and trust?
Who are people that we know, love, and trust?

8 How about those same kinds of touches from people we do not know, do not like, or do not trust?
It is very important to know, sometimes it makes a difference who is giving touching us. Hugs, kisses, and touches from people we know, love, and trust can be good touches, but those same kinds of touches from people we don’t know, love, or trust can be bad touches.

9 When we get touches, we get feelings inside.
Good touches give us good feelings. We feel happy, loved, and wanted. Good touches do not make us feel uncomfortable or ashamed.

10 Sometimes touches can give us bad feelings inside.
Sad Frightened Unloved Unwanted When a touch makes us feel sad, frightened, unloved, or ashamed, we need to say stop. I am going to show you some pictures, you see if you can tell me if these are good touches or bad touches.

11 Good touch or Bad touch?

12 Good touch or Bad touch?

13 Good touch or Bad touch? If you guessed “Good” touch about each picture, you were right. How can you tell? Do all the people in the pictures smile or seem comfortable with the touch?

14 Do you like to be tickled?
How many of us do not like being tickled? For those of us who like being tickled, is that a good touch or a bad touch? For those of us who do not like being tickled, is that a good touch or a bad touch?

15 Tickling Sometimes even when we think tickling is a good touch it can become a bad touch. Before we get started, can everyone give a thumbs up sign? How about a thumbs down sign? Good! Now you be the judge.

16 When tickling becomes bad touch.
It lasts too long It is too hard It starts to hurt You start to cry It gets hard to breathe You are being touched in your private areas Explain private areas are the areas of your body normally covered by your swimsuit. What happened to that touch? Is it a thumbs up or thumbs down touch? Sometimes touches can start out good touches, but they can turn into bad touches.

17 Good or Bad? Would you give this a thumbs up for good touch or a thumbs down for a bad touch?

18 What is happening? Are both boys having a good time?
Is one boy having a better time than the other boy. Who gets to say if a touch is a good or bad touch? Does the boy on bottom get to say or the boy on top? The person being touched is always the one to decide if it is a good or bad touch. The boy on the bottom is the one being touched. He gets to say whether he feels it is a good or bad touch. Even if the one doing the touching says it is a good touch or fun, the one being touched always gets to say good or bad touch.

19 You make the call!!! If you get a touch you do not like what is it called? A Bad Touch!!

20 No one should touch our private body parts except to keep us clean or healthy.
Even people that we know, love, and trust should not be touching us in ways that make us feel ashamed or uncomfortable. Parents, grandparents, uncles, aunts, teachers, babysitters, pastors or others should not touch you in a bad way, and should never ask you to keep it a secret.

21 No room for secrets. When touched in a bad way, do not keep it a secret. Tell someone that you trust and can help you.

22 Who can you tell? Parents Grandparents Teacher Counselor Pastor
Other trusted adults

23 Help!!! If the person you tell does not know how to help you or does not help you, what can you do? Keep telling someone until they help you. Tell other trusted adults.

24 TOUCHING RULES No one should ever touch your private parts except to keep you clean or healthy. Never agree to keep it a secret. Tell someone you trust. Remember the Touching Rules.

25 The Person Who Did the Touching.
Whose Fault Is It? The Person Who Did the Touching.
