Mineral It is a naturally occuring inorganic substance having an orderly atomic structure and a definite chemical composition and physical properties. It is consisting of one or more elements. 4 Elements

MINERALS METALLICNON-METALLIC TYPES OF MINERALS  Sulphur, Phosphate, Nitrate etc. Precious Stone Ferrous Non-ferrous  Gold, Silver, Platinium etc.  Iron, nickle etc.  Copper, Lead, Zinc etc.

Physical Characteristics of Mineral External Crystal Form: Determined by Internal arrangement of molecules-cube, hexagonal etc

Tendency to break in given directions producing relatively plane surface Cleavage

Fracture No plains of molecules, the crystal will break in an irregular manner.

Lustre Appreance of a material without regard to colour. Eg. Metallic, silky etc.

Colour Some mineral coloured by its impurities.

Streak Colour of the ground power of any mineral. Eg.fluorite is purple or green but gives a white streak.

Transparancy Transparent Translucent Opaque. Transparent Translucent Opaque.

Structure Particular arrangement of the individual crystals eg. fine grained, coarse grained etc.

Hardness Relative resistance of being scratched. Talc is soft where diamond is hard

Specific Gravity The ratio between the weight of a given object and the weight of an equal volume of water

What is a mineral? What is meant by luster ? Which element on the earth is abundant? How are rocks different from minerals ? What is a mineral? What is meant by luster ? Which element on the earth is abundant? How are rocks different from minerals ? PONDER OVER IT:

MAJOR MINERALS: FELDSPAR Major elements are Silicon and Oxygen. Half of earth crust are of this mineral. 18 QUARTZ Important component of sand and granite. Consisting of Silica. It is hard. Used in radio and radar. Important component of sand and granite. Consisting of Silica. It is hard. Used in radio and radar.

Consisting of calcium, alluminium, magnesium, iron and silica. Covers 10% of earth crust. Green and black in colour. Consisting of calcium, alluminium, magnesium, iron and silica. Covers 10% of earth crust. Green and black in colour. PYROXENE

AMPHIBOLE Aluminium, calcium, silica, iron are main constituent. Covers 7% of crust. Green or black colour. Used in asbestos industry. Aluminium, calcium, silica, iron are main constituent. Covers 7% of crust. Green or black colour. Used in asbestos industry.
