State Supreme Court, Court of Appeals, Courts of General Jurisdiction, Courts of Limited Jurisdiction 3. What is an appeal and how can you get one? If a mistake was made in a trial, NOT if you were found guilty correctly. 4. What type of cases does the US Supreme Court hear? Federal and Constitutional Law

4 “Greater Crime” Prison > 1 Year Grand Theft Murder Kidnapping Sexual Assault All drug sales Possession of drugs other than weed. Some Crimes are both misdemeanor and felony… Battery, Assault, Vandalism

5 Crimes against a person… Assault, battery, false imprisonment, kidnapping, rape. Homicide: 1, 2, 3, Manslaughter, Negligent, Justified Crimes against property… Arson, blackmail, burglary, extortion, receiving stolen goods, robbery. Crimes against justice… Obstruction of justice, perjury, perversion of justice

6 Federal Crime… “Illegal because of federal law” I.E. Taxes, treason, hate crime, wire fraud. Must be… Across state lines International Having to do with the national government. State Crime if… “Illegal because of state law” Most everything else.

7 Using the worksheet “Constitutional Protections for Persons Accused of a Crime” handout, write out a story of a person committing either a federal or state crime. Make sure you determine whether it is a misdemeanor or felony and follow the steps outlined in the handout. Complete for homework if you do not finish in class.
