4 Purpose Assumptions The 2012 curriculum reform requires teachers to adopt more activity-based, technology and resource-supported and learner- centred approaches. This will not happen unless teachers experience these approaches positively in their own training. Therefore, we need to support teacher-educators in employing these approaches in their work with student teachers. However, teaching is a cultural phenomenon and change is incremental. Therefore we need a practice-oriented continuing professional development (CPD) initiative over an extended period. We need to practise what we preach.

5 Assumptions People don’t lean to do new things by being told about them Rather, they must be actively experienced through authentic tasks; and Continuously reflected upon Therefore a series of resource- and activity-based workshops based on socio-constructivist principles Practising what we preach Spot the teacher!

6 Purpose and process Process Workshop 1: Programme design Workshop 2: Module and implementation design Workshop 3: Materials development Workshop 4: Materials review and revision Piloting and external review Purpose to provide an orientation to the implications of the curriculum review to serve as a basis for ongoing CPD.

11 Orientation module Outcomes Motivate, with understanding, the need for a shift in thinking about the nature of teaching in a changing world. Critically reflect on the nature of teaching as a profession, the need for CPD and the key professional changes required by Nigeria’s curriculum reform process. Critically describe the NCCE-TDP CPDC programme. Units: 1) Teaching in a changing world; 2) Teaching as a profession; 3) Orientation to the CPDC programme

12 Process Take the orientation module and work through it. It will provide you with a detailed overview both of the programme and of the methodology. Come back in two weeks and decide which electives you want to sign up for. We will meet here again on: XX/XX/XX at 2pm.
