Blanchard TE-VSC-ICM Overview NS -ISOLDE (On-Line Isotope Mass Separator) is a CERN facility dedicated to the production of radioactive ion beams for nuclear and atomic physics. -ISOLDE Vacuum controls drive: - Vacuum Pumps, Gauges, Valves (up to five stages of pumping) - Exhaust System (volatile radioactive elements present in the exhaust gases) - Venting System - Automatic venting and re-pumping (Several automatic intervention per month) -ISOLDE Vacuum controls are based on - Siemens S7 PLCs - WinCC OA (PVSS) SCADA applications. 2 of 19

Blanchard TE-VSC-ICM Operation Feedback: Issues during automatic restart of the Vacuum System NS After system interrupt (Ex: Power Cut) the System automatically restarts. Reminder: Due to the possible presence of volatile radioactive elements into beam sectors, the pumping gas is stored into tanks.  The system has a lot of timeout to avoid filling exhaust tanks with gas pumped coming from leaks. These timeouts active Full Stop alarms (need to be acknowledge to restart) and Temporary Stop alarms. These Full Stops cause automatic restart interrupt. Updated in 2011 and 2012 1.Timeouts are parameterized and fit to each sector characteristics 2.Some Full Stops are re-qualified to Temporary Stops For new development A. Blanchard TE-VSC-ICM Operation Feedback: Issues with complex processes NS Some processes had complex steppers and logics  cause some interrupts Updated in 2012 1.Process has been simplified and the seldom operation is now manual Examples of updates: - Penning gauges automatic switch Off by PLC only in case of Venting Request -Restart and Regeneration of cryo pumps have been simplified -... For new deployments A. Keep processes and steppers as simple as possible B. Keep manual the seldom task 15 of 19
