Artful Research To deliberate on how the Arts contribute to successful research outcomes. To consider how the Arts can be used to make our research more wholistic, empathic and are a culturally contestable way of working in the field of qualitative inquiry. To consider how arts as research can and does build connections, active engagement, sensory experience, perceptivity, risk taking, and imagination. To address how research in to and through the use of Dance, Drama, Visual Arts and Music can enrich the research field and the data.

….Lifeblood and Lifeworld…. The Arts are the lifeblood of any society. It is through the Arts that a community makes explicit its philosophical and psychological frameworks. The best of a community’s art reflects the best of that community. (McKenna, 2013)

Artful research can and does express the concerns of the individual self and the concerns of the broader society from which it arises. As such, we have much to learn from and through Arts practice and research using the arts.

The arts are a way to tap in to deeper messages about our selves that can be glimpsed through the artworks.

….used to provoke the researcher and the researched community to uncover new ways of knowing.

The arts are a way to tap in to deeper messages about our selves that can be glimpsed through the artworks.

Arts research builds connections; how it activates engagement and brings sensory experience into the lives of the researcher and the research; whilst enhancing perceptivity it has at its core imagination.

Shaperes we live by

Art as a research activity has at its heart a capacity to invokes novelty and creativity and is directly gratifying for both the maker and the viewer. The work of art usually reflects virtuosity, style and representation, and builds on the centrality of the imaginative experience for both the viewer and the art maker.

It is a source of immediate experiential satisfaction in itself and awakens (aesthetic experience) the artist-as-researcher and viewer to other viewpoints and attitudes.

….artful research has 'validity' as the power as much as possible belongs to and resides with the representation of the community being questioned and critiqued through the artworks

Handout 1 – Artful Praxis in relation to other ways of ‘researching’ our meaning

The ultimacy of making present the presence of those people being ‘researched’ has been noted earlier and should become an active occasion for discussions of social justice; equity, respect, and mutuality.

So the researcher needs to be a person who can use the engagement in the field of inquiry and an occasion for reflexive self-knowing self-hood of the life-worlds of all involved in the research whilst co-creating ways of respectful engagements and community building.
