Module 6 Lesson 4 ~ Linear Regression ~ What’s the Correlation? Module 6 Lesson 4 ~ Linear Regression ~ What’s the Correlation?

Definition: Scatter Plot A scatter plot is a graph in which two sets of data are plotted (scattered around) as ordered pairs and compared in a coordinate plane. They are used to see if there is a relationship between the two sets of data.

A positive correlation occurs when as x increases, y increases. A negative correlation occurs when as x increases, y decreases. No correlation occurs when it appears that x and y are not related.

When the pool opened in June, the manager kept a record of the temperatures each day and the attendance at the pool throughout the season. Here is a graph of the data obtained. Each point represents (attendance, temperature).

Since the attendance in general increased as the temperatures increased, the manager believe that there is a positive correlation between the daily temperature and the attendance at the pool.

Martin, a kindergarten teacher, kept a record of the number of coats worn by class members and the corresponding temperature on each day. When the data was graphed, Martin had this scatter plot.

As the number of coats increased, the temperature decreased. This lead Martin to believe that there was a negative correlation between the number wearing coats and the temperature.

Last semester, I asked some of my students to keep track of the number of minutes they spent on their Wii or xBox on a particular Saturday. I then asked these same students to keep track of the amount of time they spent on the phone that day. Since there does not seem to be any relationship between the amount of time students were on the Wii/xBox and the amount of time they were on the phone, I believe that there is no correlation between the game system time and the phone time.
