Mathematics Initiative Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction Mathematics Initiative Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction CAA Options – Collection of Evidence: Mathematics WERA Workshop December 2006 WERA Workshop December 2006

Mathematics Initiative Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction Mathematics Initiative Office of Superintendent of Public InstructionMathematics  Mathematics is a language and science of patterns  Mathematical content (EALR 1) must be embedded in the mathematical processes (EALRs 2-5)  For all students to learn significant mathematics, content must be taught and assessed in meaningful situations

Mathematics Initiative Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction Mathematics Initiative Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction Collection of Evidence  The Collection of Evidence is designed for students who have the skills and knowledge assessed on the WASL to get their Certificate of Academic Achievement  WASL is still the standard by which students’ skills and knowledge are assessed

Mathematics Initiative Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction Mathematics Initiative Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction Connection to the WASL  10 th grade Mathematics WASL has 42 items distributed across the content and process strands  Approximately 28 items scored for content  Approximately 14 items scored for process  Each item on the WASL is scored for one content target or process target  Exception: Making Connections within Mathematics can be scored for two content areas  Approximately 95% of the items on the WASL are set in a context

Mathematics Initiative Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction Mathematics Initiative Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction Collection Guidelines  The entire collection must contain work samples that demonstrate at least two (2) different targets from each content strand  At least two (2) work samples must be produced in an “on-demand” setting  Work samples must combine at least one entire content target and at least one entire process target  8 to 12 work samples

Mathematics Initiative Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction Mathematics Initiative Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction Two work samples for each strand  Two work samples for each content strand  This shows two (2) work samples for Number Sense and three (3) work samples for Probability and Statistics

Mathematics Initiative Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction Mathematics Initiative Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction “On demand”  Covered in Introduction  Student produces work completely on their own in a supervised classroom situation  Allotted time period (time for student revision included in this time)  Serves as an anchor for comparison with other student work samples

Mathematics Initiative Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction Mathematics Initiative Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction Content targets  Number Sense Targets  NS01 – Number and numeration  NS02 – Ratio and Proportion (*Required)  NS04 – Computation  NS05 – Estimation

Mathematics Initiative Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction Mathematics Initiative Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction Content targets  Measurement Targets  ME01 – Attributes and Dimensions  ME02 – Units and Systems  ME03 – Procedures  ME04 – Estimated Measurements

Mathematics Initiative Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction Mathematics Initiative Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction Process Targets  Solves Problems Targets  SR01 – Define Problems  SR02 – Construct Solutions  SR05 – Construct Solutions and Verify Results (*Required)

Mathematics Initiative Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction Mathematics Initiative Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction Process Targets  Reasons Logically Targets  SR03 – Analyze information  SR04 – Conclude  SR05 – Construct solutions and Verify Results (*Required)

Mathematics Initiative Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction Mathematics Initiative Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction 8 to 12 Work Samples ?  Able to get 8 to 12 work samples by combining content and process  Possible combinations include:  Ratio and Proportion WITH Problem Solving (NS02 and SR02)  Patterns and Functions WITH Organize, Represent, and Share Information (AS01 and CU02)

Mathematics Initiative Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction Mathematics Initiative Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction 8 to 12 Work Samples !  More Possible Combinations:  Measurement Procedures, Probability, WITH Connections within Mathematics (ME03, PS01, and MC01)  Geometric Properties and Relationships WITH Conclusions (GS01 and SR04)  CONTEXT is required to make these combinations come alive

Mathematics Initiative Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction Mathematics Initiative Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction Work Documentation Form  Title of work sample  At least one content and at least one process per work sample  Content Target(s) and Process Target(s) identified  At least two entries in each column and row
