What are Human Services? Human Services are a group of programs designed to promote the physical health, mental health, and general welfare of Georgia citizens.

Responsibilities of Human Services The Department of Human Services is designed to promote programs that enforce the overall well being of the general Georgia public.

Money Spent on Human Services It is said that the budget spent on the Human Services agencies in Georgia is the second largest of all the agencies.

What are Some of the Departments Affiliated with Human Services? There are several departments that are categorized under Human Services in Georgia. Some of the departments include DHR, DFCS, and DCH.

DHR DHR is the Department of Human Resources. This department sponsors many programs to help children and families in Georgia.

DFCS This is the Division of Family and Child Services. This association is responsible for administering the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), another Human Service.

TANF This is also known as welfare. It is a monthly cash assistance program for poor families with children under the age of 18.

DCH This is the Department of Community Health. It seeks to make sure that quality health care services are available to all Georgians, no matter where they live.

A Current Example of DFCS On March 11, 2011 the Child’s Welfare Agency investigated the deaths of four children within three week, each of which who had prior contact with DFCS. However, none of the children were in the care or custody of DFCS when they were killed. These deaths represent the first major challenge for a new administration over DFCS, and its parent agency the Department of Human Services. The agency is currently under a court settlement to improve foster care treatment or children.
