What is a tsunami? Tsunami is a series of water waves caused by the displacement of a large volume of a body of water, usually an ocean

Causes of the Tsunami An earthquake along the Fairweather Fault in the Alaska Panhandle loosened about 30.6 million cubic meters of rock high above the northeastern shore of Lituya Bay. This mass of rock plunged from an altitude of approximately 914 meters down into the waters of Gilbert Inlet.

Size of Tsunami The sudden displacement of water resulted in a megatsunami that destroyed vegetation up to 525 m above the height of the bay and a wave that traveled across the bay with a crest reported by witnesses to be on the order of 30 m in height. The largest ever recorded. Since this happened in such a remote location it is believed that there was only 5 deaths.

Facts About Tsunamis

Tsunamis are sometimes incorrectly called "tidal waves" -- tsunamis are not caused by the tides (tides are caused by the gravitational force of the moon on the sea). Regular waves are caused by the wind. If the first part of a tsunami to reach land is a trough—called a drawback—rather than a wave crest, the water along the shoreline recedes dramatically, exposing normally submerged areas.

A tsunami may be less than a foot in height on the surface of the open ocean, which is why they are not noticed by sailors. But the powerful shock wave of energy travels rapidly through the ocean as fast as a commercial jet. Once a tsunami reaches shallow water near the coast, it is slowed down. The top of the wave moves faster than the bottom, causing the sea to rise dramatically.
