Graphing Linear Equations 1

Graphing Using a Table Linear equation get their name from the fact that their graphs are straight lines. To Graph a Linear Equation Rewrite the equation in Function Form, if necessary. Choose a few values of x. Substitute to find corresponding y values. A table can be used to organize values. Plot the points. Draw a line through the points. 2

Graph of y + 2 = 3x Step 3 Step 1 - Rewrite y = 3x  2 Step 2 x -2 y = 3(-2)  2 -8 -1 y = 3(-1)  2 -5 y = 3(0)  2 1 y = 3(1)  2 2 y = 3(2)  2 4

Graphing Using a Table Example: Graph the equation y = – x + 3 Step 1 – Rewrite in Function Form. -5 x y 5 (2, 5) No need - Already in function form. (1, 4) (0, 3) (1, 2) Step 2 – Chose x values & create table. (2, 1) x y = – x + 3 y -2 y = -(-2)+3 5 -1 1 2 4

Graphing Using a Table Example: Graph the equation 8x + 2y = 6 Step 1 – Rewrite in Function Form. Step 2 – Chose x values & create table. x y

Graphing Using a Table Example: Graph the equation 2x - 2y = 4 Step 1 – Rewrite in Function Form. x y Step 2 – Chose x values & create table. x y -1 1
