What defines a political prisoners?  political prisoner is generally defined as a person who is imprisoned for his or her political activities, particularly those who oppose or criticize the government of their countries.

Political Prisoners:  According to PACE guidelines,  freedom of thought, conscience, and religion; freedom of expression and information; and freedom of assembly and association  purely political reasons  out of proportion to the offense  detained in a discriminatory  result of judicial proceedings.

In AI's use of the term, here are some examples of political prisoners:  carried out for political motives  committed in a political context  treason or “subversion”

what defines a prisoner of conscience?  as people who are imprisoned because of their political, religious or other conscientiously held beliefs, ethnic origin, sex, colour, language, national or social origin, economic status, birth, sexual orientation or other status

 These include:  non-violent political activities  struggling for autonomy  trade union activities  country’s official language  refusing to perform military  gender or sexual identity

POLITICAL PRISONER  Nelson Mandela spent 27 years as a political prisoner in South Africa before becoming, an a remarkable twist, the country's first black president.

European Convention on Human Rights provides in articles 2 and 5 that everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of person,  Article 6,right to a fair trial,  Article 7,no punishment without law  Article 9,freedom of thought, conscience and religion  Article 10,freedom of expression
