4 1 Cor. 2:14 But a natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually appraised. 15 But he who is spiritual appraises all things, yet he himself is appraised by no one. 16 For WHO HAS KNOWN THE MIND OF THE LORD, THAT HE WILL INSTRUCT HIM? But we have the mind of Christ. 3:1 And I, brethren, could not speak to you as to spiritual men, but as to men of flesh, as to infants in Christ. 2 I gave you milk to drink, not solid food; for you were not yet able to receive it. Indeed, even now you are not yet able, 3 for you are still fleshly. For since there is jealousy and strife among you, are you not fleshly, and are you not walking like mere men? 4 For when one says, "I am of Paul," and another, "I am of Apollos," are you not mere men?

5 The Three Men of Scripture natural man - psychikos - belonging to the psychē, soul (as the lower part of the immaterial in man), natural, physical, describes the man in Adam and what pertains to him spiritual man - pneumatikos - of persons who are spiritual, enlightened by the Holy Spirit, enjoying the influences, graces, gifts of the Holy Spirit carnal man (men of flesh) - sarkinos - fleshly, material, made or consisting of flesh

6 14 But a natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually appraised. subject – natural man – psychikos - every human being is a natural man until he or she trusts Christ and receives the Spirit. other verses Rom 8:9, James 3:15, Jude 19 verb – does not accept - dechomai - (not) to take to oneself what is presented or brought by another Lit: to welcome something or someone – to take something willingly direct object - the things of the Spirit of God What are these things?

The two reasons the natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God 1. for they are foolishness to him same word as we saw in 1 Cor 2:18 2. he cannot understand them he is not able to come to know them (Wuest)

8 14 But a natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually appraised. because they are spiritually appraised they = the things of the Spirit of God appraised - anakrinō - to distinguish, or separate out so as to investigate (krinō) by looking throughout (ana, intensive) objects or particulars," hence signifies to examine, scrutinize, question, to hold a preliminary judicial examination used here in 1 Cor 2:14, 15 (x2) because they are investigated in a spiritual realm (Wuest)

9 15 But he who is spiritual appraises all things, yet he himself is appraised by no one. subject – spiritual (man) - pneumatikos verb – appraises – same as in verse 14 – present tense direct object – all things i.e. the things of the Spirt of God But the spiritual man tries all things [he examines, investigates, inquires into, questions, and discerns all things], (Amp) The Greek word for spiritual ends in an ikos suffix, which refers to the character of something. The Holy Spirit characterizes the spiritual believer. - McCalley

10 15 But he who is spiritual appraises all things, yet he himself is appraised by no one. 16 For WHO HAS KNOWN THE MIND OF THE LORD, THAT HE WILL INSTRUCT HIM? But we have the mind of Christ. yet he himself is appraised by no one – Why ? verse 15b can be understood using verse 16* 16a For WHO HAS KNOWN THE MIND OF THE LORD, THAT HE WILL INSTRUCT HIM major premise: no one can instruct God 16b But we have the mind of Christ minor premise: we have God’s mind conclusion: no one can instruct us (verse 15b) * McCalley

11 3:1 And I, brethren, could not speak to you as to spiritual men, but as to men of flesh, as to infants in Christ. brethren - adelphos - denotes "a brother, or near kinsman;" in the plural believers, apart from gender Paul's use of the vocative ("brothers [and sisters]") and second person plural pronouns in v 3:1 and 2 indicates that he was addressing the whole church, not just a faction within it (cf. 1:10). Constable was not able to speak to you as I would to those dominated by the Holy Spirit (Wuest) The term “spiritual - pneumatikos” was used in the previous passages 1 Cor 2:15

12 3:1 And I, brethren, could not speak to you as to spiritual men, but as to men of flesh, as to infants in Christ. but as to men of flesh, as to infants in Christ men of flesh – sarkinos – called a “carnal man” in KJV and Interlinear infants - nēpios - without the power of speech, denotes “a little child” but as I would to those dominated by the evil nature, as I would to those in Christ who are still immature spiritually (Wuest) Paul had two issues: their carnality and immaturity

13 2 I gave you milk to drink, not solid food; for you were not yet able to receive it. Indeed, even now you are not yet able, I gave you milk to drink, not solid food milk – elementary principles of the faith solid food – the truths that a believer is to grow by for you were not yet able to receive it. for not yet were you able to assimilate the latter (Wuest) indeed, even now you are not yet able, in fact, not even yet at the present time are you able to do so (Wuest) see parallel passage in Heb. 5:12-14

14 3 for you are still fleshly. For since there is jealousy and strife among you, are you not fleshly, and are you not walking like mere men? issue1 - for you are still fleshly reason : for since there is jealousy and strife among you, This is addressing immaturity of the Corinthians issue2 - are you not fleshly, reason: and are you not walking like mere men This is addressing the domination of the sin nature (or self life)

15 4 For when one says, "I am of Paul," and another, "I am of Apollos," are you not mere men? For when one says, I belong to Paul, and another, I belong to Apollos, are you not [proving yourselves] ordinary (unchanged) men? Amplified

WHICH VINE - CHRIST OR SELF ? JN 15:4 “…..As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine, no more can you (bear spiritual fruit), except you abide in me (the spiritual vine)”.
