 Modular  Object  Orientated  Dynamic  Learning  Environment Malcolm Roberts Wintec

 Martin Dougiamas when designing Moodle wanted to create a constructivist learning environment  If used in an interactive way Moodle provides much opportunity for learning by interacting with others.  Online learning should not be a solo experience  Need to go beyond the Web 1.0 resource concept. Malcolm Roberts Wintec

Learning 2.0 Tools Collaborating Sharing Voting Networking User generated content Architecture of Participation Tagging Steve Wheeler, University of Plymouth, 2011

 By interacting with other people and our environment we construct our learning/concepts in our minds  Language and communication/interaction is very important  The teacher takes the facilitator role  We learn best by doing  Learners ‘construct’ their own learning through the interaction with the ‘environment’ Malcolm Roberts Wintec

 Moodle courses should involve learning by doing.  Is there activities set up where students respond/collaborate with each other?  Are there group activities where students work together?  Can student construct their learning? (eg. A wiki/forum or web 2.0 tool)  Are the course interactions dominated by the teacher? Malcolm Roberts Wintec

 Facilitator role  Creating online learning environments where students interact and learn from each other  Using forums that promote open activities using open questions  Providing access to online resources  Developing independent learners  Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, and Evaluate. (Five e’s of constructivism) Malcolm Roberts Wintec

 To support online learners  Responsive to learners needs  To make the online learning environment as clear and logical as possible  Provide a hands on learning environment  Provide weekly or topic aims/objectives and activities to be completed.  Let go the reins to some extent: engage the learners online (interaction between learners) Malcolm Roberts Wintec

Teacher Learners Moodle Activities Moodle Content Web 2.0 Interaction can be a very complex process

What I really mean is Malcolm Roberts Wintec

 FORUMS/FORUMS/FORUMS  Open questions in forums  Assessed forums (this makes a real difference!)  Wikis (very successful for sharing)  Chat sessions  Reflective journal/blog (peer to peer or peer to facilitator)  AN INTERACTIVE FACILITATOR!  From experience: takes time intitially but does tail off once students start interacting with each other. Malcolm Roberts Wintec

 If possible use the embed function to diplay the web 2.0 page in Moodle web page  Asynchronous is better as it allow students to input when it suits  Test embed function in label first as one of my embeds got rid of scroll bar (one week ago!)  Use a variety of web 2.0 tools in moodle site.  Have a purpose: dont use it just because it is flavour of the day  Any questions after the workshop: Malcolm Roberts Wintec

 If you want to start using a Learning Management System and your school does not yet have one.  Set up a Wikispace account and select the educational option which gets rid of the advertisments and gives you more options.  You can add content  Run forums  Embed web 2.0 tools  It is public but you need to know the URL. Malcolm Roberts Wintec

 Time to explore the interactive tools in Moodle.  Time to explore some web 2.0 tools.  Chance to interact with workshop particpants during the workshop session.  Get some ideas for embedding Web 2.0 tools into your teaching.  Use your slip of paper to logon to the Moodle Website and the Advanced Interaction site.  Hands on activities for the rest of the workshop.
