Predicting American Ideals Which team can predict the guiding American ideals first?

Directions: 1.Work in groups. 2.Read & discuss each clue – excerpt. 3.List what your team thinks are the American ideals. 4. When you think you have them, have one group member raise their hand. 5. More clues will continue to be provided every few minutes until one team has identified ALL of the ideals correctly.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. — That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, — That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. The world is very different now. For man holds in his mortal hands the power to abolish all forms of human poverty and all forms of human life. The time has come to reaffirm our enduring spirit; to choose our better history; to carry forward that precious gift, that noble idea passed on from generation to generation: the God-given promise that all are equal, all are free, and all deserve a chance to pursue their full measure of happiness. In reaffirming the greatness of our nation we understand that greatness is never a given. It must be earned. Our journey has never been one of short-cuts or settling for less. It has not been the path for the faint-hearted, for those that prefer leisure over work, or seek only the pleasures of riches and fame. Rather, it has been the risk-takers, the doers, the makers of things – some celebrated, but more often men and women obscure in their labor -- who have carried us up the long rugged path towards prosperity and freedom..
