Session: Conditions for Pop Culture

What we’ll be doing today… We will be building criteria (reasons) for how and why aspects of culture are able to be part of Pop Culture. You will also be practicing reading and extracting an argument and creating an opinion based on that reading

Highlights from Yesterday… The definition pop culture: Popular Culture is the arts, artifacts, entertainment, fads, beliefs and values that are shared by large segments of society. Can you come up with an example for each of the items underlined? Talk to the person next to you first, we’ll bring this out

Picture Analysis- Creating the Conditions for Pop Cult With the person next to you, take a look at each pic Can this be something worthy of this definition of pop culture? Does this item contradict the definition? If so how?

Processing Time… Thoughts on defining Pop Culture so far? Take 1 min to write down your thoughts on paper You’ll have a chance to check in with person next to you and then bring this out to the whole class

Reading Practice To get all of you ready for the high levels of reading, you need to actually READ! In pairs or threes, read the article Pop Goes the Culture by Bob Beasley You are going to try something new to get your brain ready to process information all year long

Some Details for Reading… Simple Instructions Partner A- You will read the article out loud Partner B- You will annotate what partner A is thinking as they read Partner A is the person who lives the closest to Animo Your task by end of time given is to get the key points of the reading…What is the author saying? 2 nd task, is track your process for reading, what are the struggles, etc For example: Lack of attention span, vocabulary, etc

What caveats/conditions need to exist? Some ideas to consider: Easily accessible Mass appeal (everyone can like it) Artistic and intellectual integrity Can take people away from ordinary lives But… can also be relatable to everyday life Shared experience Development of technology Historical context

How is culture spread? Tradition of oral stories passed down from generation to generation Before the advent of TV, newspapers, books, magazines, etc Television Music (phonograph, record, cassettes, CDs, now MP3s) Movies Art Now, the internet undoubtedly allows almost anyone

The Magic Word for Pop Cult Some questions to consider?: What happens when something does not meet the criteria mentioned above? What if access to all these medium are not available? What is that magic word that gives us Pop Culture… ACCESS!!!

Exit Slip I need to see how and what your brains are processing the information from the first few sessions. Here’s what id like from you… Your own re-edited version of the definition of pop culture I gave you…(based on what you’ve been thinking- use your Thinking Logs) How well you understand our conversations about conditions for pop culture- can you explain it to someone on the street A short response to the question of having ACCESS to pop culture and the importance of having ACCESS
