Why is this language Important? The language is consistent from kindergarten through high school Language is developmentally appropriate and makes sense to students Students are able to practice at home

What is Assessed? Comprehension: The ability to think about and understand what is being read. Decoding: The ability to break apart and figure out unknown words. Fluency: The ability to read like a story-teller Sight Words: High frequency words that students can instantly recognize. Data gathered is used in comparison with Grade Level Benchmarks

Assessment Results Determine Independent and Instructional levels Help students determine “just right books” Allow for a teacher and student to have a reading conference Allow teacher to plan Guided Groups

Independent vs. Instructional Independent Reading Level –Read with ease –Makes hardly any errors –Excellent comprehension –Read alone with confidence Instructional Reading Level –Needs support of a teacher or parent –Students are reading with 90-95% accuracy –May be introduced to new vocabulary or new reading skills

A Day in Reader’s Workshop Mini-lesson – Teacher models and actively engages students – Turn and talk with a partner Independent Reading Time – Student reads a just right book – Student practices active reading strategies – Teacher confers with students – Teacher pulls small guided reading groups or strategy groups – Teacher may give a running record Partner Reading – Students read or share thinking with a partner Class Share – Students share what they have learned or practiced as a reader

Classroom Happenings Read Aloud : Used to model important reading strategies Turn and Talk : Allow students to discuss an idea together and share thinking Stop and Jot : While reading or listening students pause to record thinking Building Stamina: Continual reading without interruption Turn & Talk Stop & Jot

Active Reading Strategies Predicting What will happen next? Clarifying Making sense of what was read Connecting Text to Self Text to Text Text to World Questioning Before, during and after reading to understand Reacting How do I feel? Why? Summarizing Retelling the story in order Include the character’s names, setting, and problem *Does not have to be at the end of the book Visualizing Making a mental picture or movie
