What is ?? A simple introduction

Ground mail You write a letter and mail it. It goes by truck, airplane, or boat. Mail goes to one special mailbox at one physical location.

(Electronic Mail) You write a message at your computer and send to someone’s address.

The Server A computer at Somewhere.com receives your message and stores it on a computer called a FILE SERVER. Your message stays on the FILE SERVER until….

The person with the USER NAME SOMEONE starts up their computer. They connect to the FILE SERVER SOMEWHERE.COM and enter their PASSWORD. The FILE SERVER at SOMEWHERE.COM sends the message to SOMEONE’s computer and they read it.

Ground Mail vs. Written on real paper Moved from place to place in a truck, plane, or boat Can take from 3 days to 3 weeks to arrive, depending on distance No paper involved Written on one computer, goes to an intermediate computer (the FILE SERVER), and finally to a third computer.
